Week Twenty Five - March 22nd, 2024
Grade 10
Last week marked a momentous occasion for our Grade 10 Design student, Riti Paghdar, as she embarked on an extraordinary journey representing United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the Central Asian FIRST Championship in Kazakhstan. This renowned robotics competition, featuring the First Tech Challenge, provided a platform for Riti to showcase her skills on an International Stage.
We're thrilled to announce that Riti and her team made us proud by clinching significant victories at the championship. They secured the prestigious “Excellence Award and the Judge's Choice Award”. These achievements are a testament to Riti's dedication, ingenuity, and collaborative spirit, reflecting positively on her and GIS as a whole.
Participating in such a high-stakes competition must have been an exhilarating experience for Riti. Her success speaks volumes about her commitment to excellence and her ability to thrive under pressure. As a school community, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Riti on her outstanding performance.
We look forward to witnessing Riti's continued success and are confident she will continue to shine brightly in all her future endeavours in Robotics and programming.

Ramadan Mubarak GIS!
Ramadan is much more than a fasting period: it is the holiest month in Islam, rooted in Faith, culture, and history. Across the globe, Muslims mark this time with vibrant celebrations that are unique to their region and passed on through generations.
Celebrated by 1.8 billion Muslims across the globe, Ramadan is observed every year during the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Taking place for approximately 30 days, it marks the month in which the Holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, in AD 610.
For Muslims, Ramadan is a month of personal worship, patience, family bonding, and sharing with the less fortunate in the community. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and is mandatory for all adult and healthy Muslims.
The holy month is full of shared traditions such as family Iftar dinners, night prayers, and practices that vary from culture to culture, from bathing rituals in Indonesia to lantern lighting in Egypt. Muslims also give their annual charity this month, called Zakat and hence you will notice free food offered in all mosques, around the country.
As an open-minded IB student, I also wish to share that Muslims believe Islam to be a continuation of all Abrahamic religions such as Christianity and Judaism and respect all Prophets of God.
We had many initiatives during Ramadan e.g. Welcome Ramadan event, Lantern treasure Hunt, Food drive for our support staff and the community Iftar. Enjoy the photo grid below!
Ramadan Kareem GIS!
Congratulations to the winners of the Education Perfect Pi Day Competition! Well done to all who competed; it's fantastic to see everyone dedicating so much time and effort to their mathematics!
In the heart of our IB MYP curriculum lies a vital component - Service. It's a facet that our Grade 9 students have embraced with great dedication in their Language Acquisition Class (French and Spanish).
This term, they embarked on a journey to delve into an issue close to their hearts: Mental Health in Teenagers.
Our students incorporated the service element, aiming to raise awareness about the challenges adolescents face here at GIS. Through comprehensive surveys among their peers, they meticulously compiled their findings into a report, mirroring the formats of organisations like the WHO, which we've extensively studied in class.
Their reports not only demonstrate the use of impressive designs but also encapsulate invaluable insights and ideas. These findings are now being disseminated throughout our school, ensuring that the voices of our students resonate loudly and are duly heard. While we already utilise platforms like Upstrive and benefit from the exceptional support of our counsellors, who play a pivotal role in student well-being, there's a realisation that the students themselves hold unparalleled insight into their own needs.
Now armed with their research, our students are poised to express themselves in various forums, including assemblies and Term 3 activities in Advisory. These platforms will be tailored to foster open communication and empathy, nurturing an environment where every voice matters.
The enthusiasm with which our students embraced this unit was palpable, resonating deeply with our Global Context Exploration of "Health and Wellbeing." They've not only grasped the importance of “collecting and analysing data to identify solutions” but have also honed their skills in “reporting results” - a testament to their development of essential ATL skills such as Research.
At the core of their message lies a powerful reminder - that no effort is too small to effect change. They've learned firsthand that presentation and format are not merely superficial elements but serve as the gateway to making a lasting impression.
In embracing this endeavour, our students have demonstrated their academic prowess and also their commitment to making a positive impact in their community. Let's continue to support and amplify their voices as they navigate the path towards creating a healthier, more empathetic world.
