Week Twenty Five - March 22nd, 2024
Kim Conlin
Head of Primary
Dear GIS Primary Families,
A highlight this week was the celebration of neurodiversity to embrace diversity, foster understanding, and promote inclusivity in our community. We appreciate the talents and contributions that each person brings to our school. We also launched the parent training for positive discipline. A common approach at both home and school benefits children to understand expectations and to trust the adults responsible for their care.
As we approach the end of Term 2, we would like to inform you that spring break will commence on Monday, March 25th, followed by the Eid Al Fitr holiday. School will resume on Monday, April 15th. The second term has been filled with many learning highlights that were shared during parent conferences. Among these highlights were Body, Mind, Spirit Week, Week Without Walls, International Day, Litfest, and Ramadan celebrations.
Upon our return to school in April, we will begin sign-ups for Term 3 ECAs, which will start on April 22nd. We have exciting events planned for Term 3, including Sustainable Week, the Spring Carnival, Earth Week, Awards Ceremonies, Grade 5's PYP Exhibition (PYPX), and the PYP Completion ceremony. We look forward to continuing our journey of learning and growth with your children in the upcoming term.
Have a safe and enjoyable Spring Break!

This column featuring insights from our students in the Gems International School (GIS).
This week we helped out the Islamic department with their food drive by collecting the donated food from each classroom and bringing it to a classroom where it was packaged ready for distribution.
On Friday all of the school’s support staff was recognised by receiving a package of essential foods, as well as some kind words of appreciation from Mr. Simon, Ms. Nomah and Ms. Rasha.
In addition to the food drive student leadership were busy advertising their own clothes donation drive. Families have helped those in need by bringing clothes to Dar Al Ber #caravanofcaring

This week we continue our Approaches to Learning series, where we come to communication skills. Although explicitly taught through language learning, communication skills are at the forefront of our educational approach as a PYP school. Communication is everywhere, embedded in everything at school, but communication is also essential for collaboration to take place. In Grade 2, for example, their Unit of Inquiry regarding simple machines has had a Project-Based Learning approach with a scientific focus. Our young learners have been encouraged to explore, tinker, and embrace the design cycle authentically. They then took these critical thinking experiences and were challenged to work in groups to create a unique design, sharing and celebrating their new understandings as they did so.
From studying the mechanics of everyday gadgets to conceptualizing ambitious projects such as a fairground game, a safer ATM, a rocket-propelled sea transportation system, and even an autonomous robot food delivery system, Grade 2 were fully immersed in learning through projects and communication. These innovative experiences are not solitary pursuits but collaborative adventures, celebrating the power of effective communication. Wherever there is hands-on exploration and experimentation, learners discover and hone their communication skills.
Of course, such approaches can be found in all our grade levels; you can see Grade 5 debating, and Grade 1 practicing communication through play; these are simply a few examples of communication development the week. Whether it's brainstorming ideas, articulating thoughts, or presenting findings, our learners are constantly engaged in meaningful dialogue, fostering a culture of collaboration and teamwork through effective communication.
Coming Soon... Term 3 Connect Eds
The purpose of the Connect Eds is to support our parent community with information related to social, emotional, and academics for their children.
We have a plethora of knowledge and expertise in our Primary School Team, and they will provide practical information and strategies.
The parent community is an integral part of GIS, and we feel it is essential to make them part of our learning community.
We hope to see many of you at the Connect Eds, and closer to the time, we will send you more information on the ConnectEds in our Newsletter for times, locations and the facilitators.
Parents have all received a notification to sign up for the Toddle platform. This is an exciting enhancement to our parent communication, and this year you will receive weekly updates through the Toddle platform.
This IB affiliated platform will offer opportunities for parents to remain up to date with their child's academic progress.
The below class pages will host resources for parents and will no longer have weekly messages. All information will be sent through Toddle, so please inform your class teacher if you have any trouble registering.
