ISSUE 28: Avoid the Biggest Trap
Iyanla Vanzant once said, "Comparison is an act of violence against the self." In today’s hyper-connected world, where social media is always at our fingertips, it has never been easier to fall into the trap of comparison. Whether it’s body image, social popularity, achievements, or material possessions, the temptation to measure our own worth against others is constant.
But while it’s natural to admire others, relentless comparison can become toxic—what some call the cancer of comparison. Social media presents a carefully curated version of reality, highlighting only the best moments while concealing the struggles behind the scenes. When we compare our whole lives—with their ups and downs—to someone else’s highlight reel, we set ourselves up for failure. This distorted perception blinds us to our own uniqueness and fuels self-doubt, leading to feelings of inadequacy and discontent (Twenge, 2017).
Studies show that frequent social comparison contributes to lower self-esteem and higher anxiety, especially among teenagers (Vogel et al., 2014). This is because our brains are wired to focus on what we lack rather than appreciating what we have. If we are not careful, this cycle of comparison can diminish our confidence and make it difficult to recognise our own achievements.
So, how can we escape this trap? The key is to focus on your own growth rather than someone else’s journey. As the saying goes, "The grass isn’t greener on the other side. The grass is greener where you water it." Instead of looking outward, turn inward—identify your strengths, set personal goals, and celebrate small wins. Mindful self-reflection and gratitude can help shift the focus away from what others are doing and back onto what truly matters: your own progress.
At GIS, we encourage students to cultivate self-awareness and self-compassion. Recognising and valuing your own journey will not only protect your mental wellbeing but also empower you to thrive. Instead of competing with others, run your own race. When you focus on your growth, confidence follows.
