ISSUE 13: The Role of Mindset in Student Wellbeing
As we find ourselves amidst the bustling activities of Term 2, it is a perfect moment to reflect on a topic of paramount importance – the profound connection between mindset and student wellbeing. At GEMS International School, our commitment to fostering a culture of respect, trust, and ambition for all resonates deeply with the principles that underscore the transformative power of mindset.
Just as our 'anti-bullying' themed week in Term 1 showcased the strength of unity in combating negative influences, a collective mindset plays a pivotal role in shaping the wellbeing of our students. The journey of learning is not just about academic achievements; it's a holistic experience that encompasses emotional resilience, positive self-perception, and an enduring sense of purpose.
Research, notably by the pioneering psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck (2006), underscores the significance of cultivating a growth mindset – one that emphasizes effort, resilience, and the belief that intelligence can be nurtured. This mindset aligns seamlessly with our cultural pillars, reinforcing the notion that every student possesses untapped potential, waiting to be unearthed through dedication and perseverance.
Teaching students about the power of mindset serves as a cornerstone in promoting perseverance and self-belief (Yeager et al., 2019). It is more than an educational concept; it's an investment in their emotional and psychological resilience. As we guide our students through the intricate web of challenges, instilling in them the understanding of mindset becomes a powerful tool for navigating the complexities of academic and personal growth.
Being an upstander in the context of a growth mindset means actively championing the transformative power of effort, acknowledging the potential in every challenge, and fostering a community where everyone's unique abilities are seen, heard, and valued.
In this journey, our school plays a pivotal role in shaping the wellbeing of our students. By cultivating a culture of growth mindset, we not only uplift individuals but contribute to the creation of a thriving, harmonious community where our children feel safe, supported, and capable of flourishing.
