Week Twenty Four - March 15th, 2024
Dear Parents,
Reading and creative writing are a key part of the educational offering from a strong IB school, so it was a delight to be invited by Ms Tarryn to listen to Omar K (Grade 2) read a book which he had written, complete with illustrations! He came to my office and enthralled me with his story of ‘Arcades’. Omar’s use of similes was impressive, such as ‘the circus was as busy as an airport’ and ‘the boy was as sad as a lonely puppy’. Well done Omar and thank you for sharing.
Students from our Tareeqi programme also impressed this week with their Ramadan messages and wonderful display made from recycled materials. Thank you for the presentation!
I enjoyed touring current parents today to see some of our school facilities, to talk about plans for development and to hear from Mr Javier and Mr Vikas about our incredible design and tech pathways, from robotics and AI, coding and CAD work, to hydroponics and life on Mars. Thank you to these parents for your interest and I invite any parent who wishes to meet me and see how your children are benefiting from cutting-edge STEAM facilities to contact Ms Helen, our Parent Relations Executive, on pre_gis@gemsedu.com
I would like to commend Nour M (G12) for her recent fencing success. On March 2nd, Nour Mecherek (G12) went to Cairo for the African Junior Cadette Championships 2024. Twelve countries were represented in Cairo. Nour, competing for Tunisia, took part in the individual and the team U20 Foil event. Nour gained a Bronze Medal in the team event. Nour has been training diligently and balancing this high-intensity training with being a successful IB student and coping well with the demands of the DP. Nour trains five times a week in Abu Dhabi, leaving on the bus from Dubai at 5 pm and returning home at 11.30 pm. In the Championship, Nour beat last year's defending champion in the U20 individual event. Competing over six days, Nour states of the experience, “I approached the competition with a lot of motivation; I prepared really hard for it, so I had full trust in my abilities. I am super happy with the outcome, and this is just the first step towards many accomplishments.” Well done Nour - we are all very proud of you!
Our staff have been very generous in donating, during the period of Ramadan. This has included donations to ensure two members of support staff are able to participate in Umrah. Both Saidul Bokul Miah and Muhammad Masud Ahmed were selected at random and we wish them the very best indeed for this special pilgrimage.
Finally, I would like to provide you with advanced noticed of the first day of school next academic year (2024-25), to help with your holiday planning. The first day of school for new students and all Grade 6 students will be 26th August. All other students will return on 27th August. I hope this is useful for you. The full calendar will be published as soon as approvals have been given.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Family First Story
My name is Nour Mecherek, I am a 17 year old student at Gems International School and high level fencer, hopefully heading for the Olympics one day. I have been in the sports industry for a while now and have done countless interviews. A recurring question I always get is “who has been a big part of your athletic journey?”, and the first person that comes to mind every single time is my amazing mother. My mother never gave me any idea that I couldn’t do anything I want to do or be anything I wanted to be. She gave me role models to look up to without realizing that the person I looked up to the most was her. Everyday she teaches me to be the best version of myself. She believes in my hopes and dreams and sacrifices so much for me. She drives me back and forth to Abu Dhabi for training multiple times a week, waits for me to finish for four hours and all with a bright smile on her face. She pays for my travels and equipment and makes sure I never need anything. She is the pillar of my life, of my success. I could have never achieved anything without her, without her instillation of strength, resilience and determination in me, which I take from her.
