Week Two - September 6th, 2024
Dear Parents,
Now that school is well and truly back in rhythm, I have started to go into classrooms again to see our students, teachers and teaching assistants at work, which is a very enjoyable part of my job! This week I dipped into pre-k and am grateful to Ms Aimee and her students for the warm welcome. There was so much busy and purposeful activity going on and it was wonderful to see how well our youngest children are settling.
I have a polite request please. You will notice that both primary and secondary school teachers and leaders have a dress code, and that our students have a school uniform that we adhere to. We would politely ask that parents also dress appropriately when in the school building, as a matter of respect to all. Thank you for your attention to this. We have a sign outside the main entrance as below:
I mentioned facilities in my last newsletter and I thank you for your positive comments on the changes effected during the summer break. I shall produce a video next week on a walkabout, given that you may not be aware of all the enhancements and new builds. I can confirm that the new sports hall will soon be open, which will hugely enhance our sports programmes and allow for more PE and sport indoors, so crucial in our climate. I am grateful to the Chief Operating Officer of GEMS Education, Mr Zafar Raja, for his focus on ensuring the sports hall is ready in the shortest time frame now. In addition, our swimming pool will re-open very soon, after checks and tests on the water are carried out.
Last week I mentioned traffic and I would like to give a brief update. Although certain things are beyond my control, such as road layout, Emaar planning, and RTA requests, I am always keen to help our parents by working with our neighbouring schools. I can confirm that WEK secondary parents are entering from the back of the school. I have also asked our own secondary school parents to drop at WEK or at Gate 10 (thereby negating the need to turn right). I have also listened to some parental requests for a larger drop-off window (from 7.30am). Morning ECAs have also begun, which thins out some of the traffic.
Some parents arrive early and would like to drop and go, which would help the traffic situation. We shall write to you on this, as there will be an opportunity for around 100 parents to apply. There will be conditions attached, and strict rules for the students who will be supervised in the school canteen. I hope this measure taken by the school will be welcomed. Thank you for your suggestions and understanding.
My thanks to Ms Amanda and team this week for their ‘Back to School’ nights, which were full of information (MYP on Tuesday and CP/DP on Wednesday). Well done to the presenters and my thanks also to the parents who attended. Please do not hesitate to follow up with any questions.
As I have mentioned previously, you have made an astute decision in being part of a four-programme IB school! I am constantly being asked to provide advice on the IB as an educational framework which leads to superb outcomes, in both knowledge and skills, welcomed by universities and employers worldwide. This week I presented at the GEMS School Support Centre to the highest GEMS leadership, on how we are delivering excellence across the group in IB networks, professional development and best practice. A GIS team was also the only school invited to a British Mums networking event, to provide information on GEMS, GIS and the educational offerings in UAE.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Dear Parents,
