Week Two - September 6th, 2024
Sarah McLean
Head of Primary
Dear GIS Primary Families,
We've had a great second week of school full of connection-building and fun! The primary leadership team hosted the first assembly of the year for G4-5 students, and will visit all of the first assemblies for other grade levels in coming weeks. This assembly was designed to set a positive tone for the year ahead and highlight our school's values. During the assembly, Mr. Javier launched student leadership opportunities for students in G4-5 students; G2-3 will be launched next week. We are expanding student leadership opportunities, with elections and nominations for various roles starting soon. This is a wonderful chance for students to develop their leadership skills and contribute to our school community.
A reminder that we will host Part 1 of our Back to School event virtually from 4:00 - 4:30 on September 12th; your child's homeroom teacher shared a zoom link to this event in their week 2 email this week. If you have not received this, please reach out to your teacher. This session will be recorded and shared with you after the session, in case you are not able to attend live. Part 2 of Back to School is all about connections, where we are inviting parents to see what important aspects of community building and learning look like during the day. Please see the details below for each grade level and note the date your child(rens) grades will be participating: either on September 18, 19, or 20th.
We are also excited for the beginning of ECAs in PYP next week! We can't wait to see what fun things our students engage with during their sessions. Please make sure you mark your calendars for the ECAs your child is registered for and email pypeca_gis@gemsedu.com if you have any questions! Ms. Rasha, the primary ECA coordinator, will be happy to assist.
Our external assessment window will begin on September 16th for all students in G1-5 where they will complete the NGRT Reading assessment and the MAP Math, Language (G2-5 only), and Science (G3-5 only) assessments. These assessments will help us understand each child's next steps in learning and support us in personalizing their learning engagements.
Don't forget to read about some of the exciting learning that happened this week in the PYP. Below you will find our Peek Into Learning, all about setting class agreements, our Wellbeing page all about Calm Corners and Student Life page which is all about the election process for student leadership.
Lastly, please mark your calendar for the upcoming Transition to Dubai parent ConnectEd (details below), on September 11th at 2pm in the Conference Room.
We are looking forward to a successful and engaging term ahead. Thank you for your continued support in making this school year a positive and rewarding experience for all students.
Warm Regards,
Sarah McLean
