Week Nineteen - February 14th, 2025
Dear Parents,
It is rare that we congratulate the same group of students two weeks in a row but I am delighted to say we can this week! Our talented Robotics/First Lego League Team has come in the top 5 teams in the national competition, out of 169 teams, to advance to the international Open Festival, in Australia! This is a huge feat and I am happy to name them again: Anannya R (G8), Selda G (G8), Bhadra R (G10), Sanchita B (G7), Andy F (G8), Jinu K (G8), Parin R (G8) and Prajna M (G10).
This week we have enjoyed some memorable performances by our primary school students in their concerts. My thanks to our music teachers, homeroom teachers and teaching assistants for their hard work in preparing for this, our parents for supporting in huge numbers and of course the wonderful children who were so dynamic in their performances!
My thanks to Ms Leila and helpers from our Arabic and Islamic departments for the amazing welcome to school on Wednesday, with treats, Arabic coffee and music. This was for the Emirati festival of Hag Al Laila, which denotes the middle of the month of Sha’ban, the month before Ramadan. Meaning ‘for the night’, the festival celebrates the tradition whereby children on this night would go from door to door singing ‘Atoona Hag Al Laila’ or ‘give us sweets for this night’.
Finally, our university and career counsellor, Ms Meena, gains a double mention in this week’s newsletter. Firstly, Ms Meena gave an excellent ConnectEd session on university admissions to countries around the world. Secondly, she and Ms Rejina were recognised with awards at the Yalla Counsellors Awards Ceremony. This annual event celebrates the dedication and achievements of school career counselors across the Middle East. By recognising these professionals, Yalla Schools highlights their crucial role in guiding students toward successful futures. Well done Ms Meena and Ms Rejina!
Kind regards and have a good weekend,

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Greetings from the GIS clinic.
As part of our commitment to the safety and well-being of all students, we would like to remind you that GEMS International School is a NUT-FREE school. Peanut and nut allergies are among the most common food allergies in children, and some of our students have severe reactions. In some cases, even indirect exposure—through physical contact with a person or object that has come into contact with nuts can trigger a life-threatening allergic reaction.
To ensure the safety of all our children, we kindly ask that you do not send any nut products in your child’s lunchbox or on school trips. This policy also applies to party food, special occasions, and school events.
We greatly appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe environment for every child, including those with life-threatening nut allergies.
Thank you for your support!
Best regards,
Dr. Sanam Shaikh

The Country Ambassador program was launched in 2021 with the intention of helping connect families with their motherland tongue and country. Small community sub groups have been created to help integrate new families from these specific countries as they enroll at GIS. We encourage you to join your country group via the QR code.
Although as a whole, we are one big family, it’s always nice to connect with those from our country. Ultimately, the goal is to have at least ONE representative for each country.
If you see that your country or ambassador is not listed and you are interested in representing your country, please reach out to us via email at gispa@gemsisak.com
Our Iranian, Egyptian and Latino parents have already started to welcome returning and new parents on a nice breakfast gathering.
We encourage all GIS communities to get together and keep us posted.
From 20th February GIS house color t-shirts and swim wear will be available to purchase from threads.
