Week Eighteen- January 20th 2023
Kim Conlin
Head of Primary
Dear PYP Parents,
As you have been informed through Mr Simon Herbert's notice, GIS will be undergoing a KHDA inspection this coming week. Nine inspectors will be in the school visiting classes and meeting with groups of teachers and students. We are excited to showcase the great things happening in the Primary School and we are confident that our students and staff will impress anyone who walks through our doors. Please help out by ensuring your child arrives to school in time each day in their proper GIS uniform.
We've had to make a few adjustments to our schedule in light of this visit. Report cards will be delayed by a week in publishing. This will not affect the mid year parent teacher conferences.
Grades 1- 5 will take their Winter MAP Reading Assessment on Jan 30-Feb 1, and on February 2-3 there will be Parent Teacher Conferences. More details about both will be shared closer to the date.

Our peek into learning is excited to highlight the phenomenal work of our grade 3 team. Since the beginning of January, students have been inquiring about the central idea 'People explore past civilizations to connect with the present and innovate the future.'
In art, students have explored ancient civilizations' pottery. Over the next few weeks, they will create a vase depicting the design characteristics of a specific ancient civilization.
In class, students have learned about some characteristics that define civilizations (social structure, food supply, inventions and technology, writing and culture, and architecture). Students used this knowledge to build an understanding of their present-day experiences. The link between the past and the present was most evident in writing and mathematics. Students wrote their names and secret codes using Cuneiform (one of the oldest forms of writing known) and Hieroglyphics. Students also applied their knowledge of number systems to place value and created their own numerical symbols.
The teachers and students have done a fantastic job of bringing the past to life and using their findings to understand their present reality and imagine the future.
