Week Sixteen- January 6th 2023
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Welcome back! I hope you were able to enjoy the Winter Break with family and friends, and that you are all refreshed and ready for the coming weeks. It certainly has been wonderful to welcome the whole community back to school, refreshed and excited for what lies ahead.
During our first week of 2023, our Arabic team (across the primary and secondary schools) coordinated Arabic Language Day, which included a community-wide, celebratory welcome upon arrival to school, in addition to various activities throughout the day to celebrate and reinforce the importance of promoting Arabic language among UAE nationals and expatriates, alike. Thank you to Mr. Majid, Ms. Wafaa and your respective teams for delivering such an enjoyable and culturally significant event.
Secondary students also enjoyed the opportunity to visit the GIS Expo. A big thank you and well done must go to our student leaders, for organizing and executing such a well-received showcase of the student-led projects and initiatives that are available for GIS students to expand their service and leadership experience, to develop a variety of skills and to connect with like-minded peers. Throughout the day, students have been excitedly signing up for projects and activities. We look forward to observing the growth and impact of these initiatives, both on our students and the wider community.
Looking ahead to next week, MYP students will engage in interdisciplinary units (IDUs) of study.
"In the Middle Years Programme (MYP), interdisciplinary learning supports students to understand bodies of knowledge from two or more disciplines or subject groups, in order to integrate them and create new understanding."
https://www.ibo.org/programmes/middle-years-programme/curriculum/interdisciplinary/
An Interdisciplinary Unit is created through the collaboration of the teachers in two learning areas. Every MYP class and student will be involved in a unique school experience. Grades and classes will work together in two learning areas to find out how much these have in common and how learning from one translates into learning in another. Finally, all students will create a product to showcase their learning and YOU will be invited to see what they have done. Our students, last year, did fantastically – here are some photographs from last year to give you a taster of the week ahead.
Additionally, Stu Williamson Photography will visit next week to capture this year's student photographs. As well as being available for families to purchase, these photos will feature in the yearbook. Students are expected to wear full GIS uniform, as usual. The schedule is available below. Students who have PHE on the day that is scheduled for them to have their photo taken should wear their uniform to school and pack their PHE kit to change into.
On the subject of uniform, prior to this week, all secondary parents/guardians received an email about secondary school uniform standards and expectations. I'm happy to report that, for the most part, we have seen a positive shift in standards, with the vast majority of students proudly presenting in full uniform. And, I must say, it's great to see - thank you for your support and encouragement!
Looking further ahead, please keep an eye out for upcoming Parent ConnectEd workshops, which will be of particular interest and significance to Grade 10 families. These sessions will cover CP/DP pathways and the associated requirements/expectations for students who are embarking upon which. Also, this term, Grade 12 students will undertake their trial exams and Grade 10 students will be working towards the Personal Project Exhibition. Moreover, there are a host of community events to look forward to throughout term 2.
As ever, we encourage your ongoing engagement and partnership.

Hello Parents!
Hopefully, you will recognize the adjacent poster from a previous correspondence to launch The Toolbox. In response to this, we received feedback that GIS parents had expressed interest in supporting our initiative.
Are there any topics in which you would consider yourself an expert? If so, consider yourself invited to the "Parent-Panel", hosted by Toolbox. The Parent Panel will provide a platform through which GIS students may become better informed about real-world matters. Whether it be understanding cryptocurrencies or changing a tire, we welcome guests to discuss topics that equip GIS Students for the real world -- the stage is yours!!
If interested, please complete this Google Form.
Many thanks for your anticipated support!
The Toolbox Team
Last year, the amazing Student ELT launched the Secondary Student Hub for secondary students. This is an ongoing collaborative project between the Student ELT, Inclusion Team & Grade Leaders.
The Secondary Student Hub will remain the students access point for the new social groups and peer mentoring, as well as signing up for the already established peer tutoring programme.
Students will also be able to find links to ECAs, student voice initiative, counsellor referral forms, mindset matters and homeroom information. We are really proud of the work that the Student ELT have put in to this so far and look forward to seeing their expansion of the site.
*Students must be logged into their gemsisak gmail account to access the site.

Grades 9
Throughout semester one, grade 9 students worked on a creative task related to their study of The Lord of the Flies novel. The scrapbook project required students to maintain a scrapbook from the perspective of one of the characters marooned on a tropic island. This gave each student creative freedom to show their understanding of both character and plot. The end result was that some students produced exceptional work that exceeded expectations.
Homeroom begins at 8:10am, following the UAE national anthem.
students are considered late if they arrive to class after the anthem.
Monday to Thursday: 3:15pm
Friday: 11:40am
Please arrange for students to be collected promptly after dismissal. Secondary students are not permitted to gather inside the Main Reception or Slices Cafeteria while awaiting collection. They may wait in the adjacent courtyard or the outdoor area at the front of the school, being careful not to block doorways.
*Parents may enter the school campus via Gate 4, Gate 6 and Gate 8.

Digital devices, such as smartphones and tablets, make online platforms and content easily accessible. And, while there are many benefits of seamless accessibility and connectivity, there are also many potential risks - to the health, well-being and even the safety of young people - that must be considered by young people themselves, as well as by parents and schools. Technological advances are faster than ever and new online platforms are released at a rapid rate, making it challenging to effectively monitor and control (for their own well-being) the online activity of the young people in our care.
Young people will, at times, seek out and/or be inadvertently exposed to inappropriate online content. If and when this is the case, it is important that they feel comfortable and confident to disclose and discuss the matter with trusted adults. While banning smart devices may not be practical (or desirable), implementing agreements around device usage (for instance) is a healthy and productive approach to online media balance and safety. There are a number of useful tips and strategies available to support healthy and well-informed approaches to media use. Please take some time to explore the E-safety: Parent Guidance, which has been created to support GIS parents in this regard.
