ISSUE 21: Friendship Truths
Friendships bring immense meaning and joy to our lives, but they also come with their own set of challenges. This balance of positive and sometimes complex experiences is a natural part of developing strong, supportive relationships, especially during adolescence. Research shows that understanding the realities of friendships helps students set healthy expectations, maintain boundaries, and make better choices in their social lives (Kerford, 2015).
Dana Kerford, founder of URSTRONG, an international social-emotional wellbeing program, emphasizes four key “truths” about friendships, which can be especially helpful to students as they navigate these relationships.
Every Friendship Has Conflict
Conflict is a part of all relationships, and friendships are no exception. Disagreements and misunderstandings can arise, but rather than avoiding these situations, learning to address them constructively can strengthen relationships over time. Developing conflict-resolution skills can help students build resilience and maintain healthier friendships.
Every Friendship Is Different
Each friendship has its own unique qualities, shaped by the personalities, values, and experiences of the individuals involved. Recognizing that friendships will look and feel different allows students to embrace diversity in their relationships without the pressure to conform to a particular standard.
Integrity and Respect Are Essential for Healthy Friendships
Respect and integrity form the foundation of any strong friendship. When friends demonstrate honesty, trustworthiness, and respect, they create a supportive environment where each person can grow and thrive. Teaching students to prioritize these qualities encourages them to nurture friendships based on mutual understanding and respect.
Friendships Change – and That’s Okay
Friendships evolve, especially as young people go through various life stages. Sometimes, friends grow apart due to changing interests or circumstances, and that’s a natural part of life. Understanding this truth can help students process these shifts positively, enabling them to appreciate past connections while remaining open to new friendships.
These truths provide students with a grounded understanding of what to expect in friendships, helping them make thoughtful, healthy choices in their social lives. By having realistic expectations, we’re empowering our students at GEMS International School to build meaningful and fulfilling relationships that align with our values of respect, trust, and ambition for all.
