Our Mission

UBC Geering Up brings STEM learning opportunities to families across BC, with special outreach programs for groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. We believe that STEM education needs to be hands-on, inquiry driven, and accessible.

Part of a National Network

Actua provides training, resources and support to its national network of members located at universities and colleges across Canada in the delivery of STEM education outreach programming. Each year, these members engage over 250,000 youth in 500 communities nationwide. www.actua.ca.

MESSAGE FROM THE PROGRAM MANAGER

Recognizing that not all families can visit us at UBC, a primary goal of our long-term growth plan is the creation of satellite sites. Our vision is for a network of sites serving their local communities. After three years of investment, our Surrey Programs have reached full maturity and were among some of our best-attended programs in 2018. We are proud to now offer all core programming types in Surrey - Saturday Events, School Workshops, After-School Clubs, and Summer Camps. For 2019, work is already underway to create our next satellite programs in North Vancouver and Delta.

Our work with Indigenous communities (InSTEM Programs) continues to be a key focus. Our InSTEM team delivered programs in over 25 Indigenous communities in 2018 working with over 2,700 Indigenous youth. We are proud of this growth, but what we are most excited about is the increase we saw in the hours spent with each youth and the number of contact points per community. We want to be a reliable and regular member of the communities we work with by creating wrap-around learning experiences that are integrated with local schools. We saw notable growth towards this goal in 2018. During the fall delivery season, over 50% of the Indigenous youth we worked with were participating in their second or third GU program of the year.

We are incredibly proud of all that our team accomplished in 2018, but there are still substantial barriers to equality in STEM participation among BC children. We are working hard to build systems to address this inequality, but we need your continued support. In the following pages, you’ll find details on our plans for the year ahead. We hope you’ll join us in making 2019 the most successful year yet!

Sincerely,

Jakob Manning
