Helping students choose a book

Children need the opportunity to read books they have freely selected every day. But what do you do if your child isn't choosing an appropriate book?

First, don't worry too much. Remember that they are still reading parent or teacher selected books too. Choosing books that seem too easy builds confidence and gives them time to practice their skills. Sometimes children struggle through difficult books because they are motivated to learn the content. That's ok too - they are using their strategies to push their limits.

Second, use the IPICK acronym to help them choose a good fit book. While they are learning this strategy, ask them these specific questions (or more if needed) to prompt them to reflect on their selections.

Try vocalizing your book selection as well. Tell your child why you choose to read the books you enjoy.
