Oh, say can you see,
By the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed
At the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars,
Through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched
Were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets red glare,
The bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there.
Oh say does that star spangled
Banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free
And the home of the brave?
John Henry
When John Henry was a little baby,
A-sittin’ on his papa’s knee,
He picked up a hammer and a little piece of
Steel, said, “Hammer’s gonna
Be the death of me Lord, Lord,
Hammer’s gonna be the death of me!”
Well, the captain said to John Henry,
“Gonna bring me a steam drill around,
Gonna bring me a steel drill out on the job,
Gonna whup that steel on down, Lord, Lord.
Gonna whup that steel on down.”
John Henry said to his captain,
“A man ain’t nothin’ but a man,
And before I let that steel drill beat me down,
I’ll die with a hammer in my hand, Lord, Lord,
I’ll die with a hammer in my hand.”
John Henry was drivin’ on the mountain,
And his hammer was flashing fire!
And the last words I heard that poor boy say,
“G’me cool drink a-water for I die, Lord, Lord,
Cool drink a-water for I die.”
John Henry, he drove fifteen feet,
The steam drill only made nine,
But he hammered so hard that he
Broke his poor heart, and he laid down his
Hammer and he died, Lord, Lord,
He laid down his hammer and he died.
They took John Henry to the graveyard,
And they buried him in the sand,
And every locomotive comes a-roaring by
Says “There lies a steel driving man,
Lord, Lord, there lies a steel driving man.”
II: 1. John Henry, 2. John Henry,
John Henry, Huh!
John Henry, John Henry,
3. Steel driving man!
John Henry, John Henry,
John Henry, Huh!
John Henry, John Henry,
Steel driving man!
John Henry was a steel driving man :II
Whistle While You Work
(whistle)
Just whistle while you work. (whistle)
Put on that grin, and start right in
To whistle loud and long.
Just hum a merry tune. (hum)
Just do your best, then take a rest,
And sing yourself a song.
When there’s too much to do,
Don’t let it bother you.
Forget your trouble, try to be just
Like the cheerful chickadee. (Rec.)
And whistle while you work. (whistle)
Come on get smart, tune up and start to
Whistle while you work.
(whistle verse 1, hum verse 2)
When there’s too much to do,
Don’t let it bother you.
Forget your trouble, try to be just
Like the cheerful chickadee. (Rec.)
And whistle while you work. (whistle)
Come on get smart, tune up and start to
Whistle while you work.
9 to 5
Tumble outta bed and I stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
And yawn and stretch and try to come to life
Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumpin'
Out on the streets the traffic starts jumpin'
With folks like me on the job from 9 to 5
Workin' 9 to 5 - what a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by - it's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind - and they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it
9 to 5 - for service and devotion
You would think that I would deserve a fair promotion
Want to move ahead but the boss won't seem to let me
I swear sometimes that man is out to get me mm-mm-mmm
They let you dream just to watch 'em shatter
You're just a step on the boss man's ladder
But you got dreams he'll never take away
In the same boat with a lot of your friends
Waitin' for the day your ship'll come in
And the tide's gonna turn an' it's all gonna roll your way
II: (Workin') 9 to 5 - what a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by - it's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind – and (they never give you) credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it
9 to 5, yeah - they got you where they want you
There's a better life - and you think about it don't you
It's a rich man's game - no matter what they call it
And you spend your life putting money in his wallet :II
Timber
Got to pull this timber ‘fore the sun goes down,
Get it ‘cross the river ‘fore the boss comes ‘round.
Drag it on down that dusty road,
Come on, Jerry, let’s dump this load.
Haulin’ timber, (timber), Lord this timber gotta roll.
Haulin’ timber, (timber), Lord this timber gotta roll.
My old Jerry was an Arkansas mule,
‘Been everywhere and he ain’t no fool.
Work is heavy, old Jer gets sore;
Pull so much he wouldn’t pull no more.
Haulin’ timber, (timber), Lord this timber gotta roll.
Haulin’ timber, (timber), Lord this timber gotta roll.
Jerry’s old shoulder is six feet tall;
Pull more timber than a freight can haul.
Weighs nine hundred and twenty-two;
Done everything a poor mule can do.
Haulin’ timber, (timber), Lord this timber gotta roll.
Haulin’ timber, (timber), Lord this timber gotta roll.
