OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMS
The Chamoru Studies and Special Projects Division (CSSPD) is inclusive of the Chamoru Language and Culture Program (CLCP) K-5 and the Chamoru Mandate Program Secondary (CHAMPS); both programs are locally funded.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS
Chamoru is the language of instruction. Instructional methods used by teachers include Total Physical Response (TPR), Natural Approach, Language Experience Approach, Whole Language, Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), Functional-Notional Approach, and other second language methods.
CURRICULUM & DEVELOPMENT
The Chamoru Studies & Special Projects Division (CSSPD) designs and develops the Chamoru Language and Culture Content Standards & Performance Indicators for each grade level (K-12). CSSPD produces numerous Chamoru instructional materials for teacher and student use. These include teacher resource materials, student activity books and grade level readers, instructional posters and other visual aides, the Fino' Chamoru Column, and other materials all based on the developed curriculum.
TRAINING & STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Office staff provide and coordinate with other educational agencies all pre-service and in-service training activities for all instructional staff. Administrator and current staff assist school administrators in the observation (informal) evaluation of program teachers as requested.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Chamoru Studies and Special Projects Division staff writes and prepare the illustrations for the Fino' Chamoru lessons and activities published in the comic section of the Pacific Daily News from Monday through Saturday.
SILIBRASION MES CHAMORU (CHAMORRO MONTH CELEBRATION)
The Chamoru Studies and Special Projects Division together with other agencies, conducts island-wide Chamoru activities that promotes and perpetuates the language and culture of Guam. Students, teachers, and parents are encourage to participate in activities such as the Chamoru Month poster theme competition, culinary exhibitions, weaving competition, Chamoru Language Competition and other activities.
