On November 17, 1998, the Guam Committee on Education conducted a public hearing at Y.E.S. on Resolution No. 433 to rename Yigo Elementary School to “Daniel Laynez Perez Elementary School”.
Mr. Daniel L. Perez was born in the Philippines on July 21, 1882. Since 1914, Mr. Perez dedicated more than 30 years of his life to educating and guiding the children of Guam. Yigo Elementary is only one of the many schools Mr. Perez served as an educational administrator.
Mr. Perez’ second assignment to Y.E.S. (post-World War II) brought him to coconut leaf roof shacks, picnic tables and benches, which were donated by the 5th Field Marines. Shortly thereafter, a single wooden classroom was built. Mr. Perez was joined by his wife, daughter and other family members in educating the students of the Yigo area.
After the construction of a new wooden school building in 1948, Mr. Perez suffered a severe stroke and remained paralyzed until his death on September 23, 1951.
Daniel Laynez Perez, along with family members, created a continuous and nurturing learning environment for over 30 years. His unconditional dedication to educating our young was appreciated by all the people of Guam.
To memorialize Mr. Perez’ many contributions to our community, the Guam Territorial Board of Education approved the resolution on November 20, 1998, renaming Yigo Elementary School to “Daniel Laynez Perez Elementary School”.
