How will students be graded for the third and fourth quarter?

Third quarter grades were completed and posted prior to school closures and will stand. There will be no 4th quarter grade. Students’ semester grade will be based on the 3rd quarter grade only.

Students who received a 59% or below (failing grade) for the 3rd quarter will receive a 60% for their semester grade and be awarded the half credit.

Students taking honors or Advanced Placement (AP) course(s) will receive the additional 10 points, except for students who failed the 3rd quarter with a 59% or below. For AP/Honors students who failed the 3rd quarter, they will receive a 60% for the class without the 10-point bonus. All AP/Honors students will receive credit for their course.

How will the top ten rankings be determined?

Top 10 students and overall student ranking is based on students’ overall cumulative Grade Point Averages. This will not change. As noted in Question #1 above, students’ 2nd semester grade will be based on their 3rd quarter grades with the exception of those who failed the course. In these cases of 3rd quarter failures, students will receive a 60% for the semester.

Will students who were enrolled in Night School receive credit?

Because Night School already follows a distance learning format, the Curriculum & Instruction Division has been working with teachers to adjust the deliverables for each session, taking into account the current school closures. Students enrolled in Sessions A or B will be graded accordingly by their teachers based on the work submitted.

Will students receive credit if they were enrolled in Asmuyao?

Asymuao has been operational and Asmuyao teachers are reaching out and working with students on their final assignments and grades. Students should work with their Asmuyao teachers to ensure they complete final assignments and receive credit.

Will Advanced Placement students be able to take the AP test?

Yes, testing is free for students and the tests will occur online beginning in mid-May. Testing will be conducted at the same time throughout the world and will not accommodate for time differences. Students should confirm their test dates and times to acclimate themselves to the testing time frame. AP students are encouraged to reach out to their AP teachers if they have questions or would like tips for testing. Students are also encouraged to visit www.collegeboard.org for additional resources.

Will students still receive Guam Community College (GCC) work experience hours?

GCC teachers are handling this on a case-by-case basis with students who are earning their work experience hours. Students in these classes should contact their GCC teachers to address this.

Will students be able to complete School-To-Work hours?

The GDOE policy requires 90 hours of work experience for every 0.5 credit earned. Students affected by this should contact their teachers or school administrators.

Will high schools still have graduation ceremonies in June?

High schools will not have traditional graduation ceremonies due to the serious health and safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision to cancel traditional graduation ceremonies also took into account the unavailability of the University of Guam fieldhouse due to the COVID-19 response efforts, the restrictions on large gatherings, and social distancing requirements in government facilities. However, each school is looking into alternative options to celebrate students and their accomplishments. The official graduation date for all high schools is Monday, June 8, 2020, and will be reflected on all diplomas

How will students pick up diplomas and transcripts?

Schools are still determining how to safely distribute both diplomas and transcripts. One official transcript will be provided to students along with their diploma. Additional copies may also be requested. Transcripts will contain a special note describing the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Guam Education Board Resolution 2020-03. More information regarding diploma and transcript distribution will be announced at a later time.

If there is no graduation, will students/parents be refunded for caps and gowns?

The GDOE will be providing an official letter to vendors informing them of the decision to cancel traditional graduation ceremonies. The vendors who provided caps and gowns will make the determination as to whether refunds will be possible

Therefore, seniors will not be required to meet the 75 service learning hours prior to graduation. Graduating seniors will automatically receive the difference between the required 75 hours and their current hours.
