SCHOOL BACKGROUND
Astumbo Middle School opened on August 21, 2008, with Mr. Robert G. Martinez as the school’s first principal. The school is located in the Astumbo area of Dededo which is the most populous village on Guam. It is one of two middle schools serving the area. The village of Dededo has an estimated population of 31,728 that encompasses an exceedingly diverse populace of middle to lower socio-economic backgrounds in mostly residential or rural areas. A majority of the students are of Chamorro, Filipino, and Micronesian descent which creates a student body that is ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse. We take pride in our diversity!In line with the Department of Education’s vision for our educational community to prepare students for life, promote excellence and provide support, we at Astumbo Middle School are committed to fostering a safe and supportive learning environment that promotes academic success, positive social development, and technological competence so as to prepare our students to become lifelong learners and contributing citizens of our community.SCHOOL BACKGROUND
Other services that are provided at Astumbo Middle School include busing, free and reduced meals, Special Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), Parent-Family-Community Outreach, and truancy prevention.Astumbo Middle School aims to provide an environment that is conducive to learning and that enables the maturing adolescent to acquire knowledge, experience problem-solving techniques, enhance their personal creativity, and develop good moral values. The school intends to fulfill the educational needs and interests of the many different students it serves, and to provide the proper guidance needed for those students to become model citizens who are both central figures and interacting entities of the community. The school embraces the concept of serving as a bridge between elementary and high school, with major emphasis on curriculum that is based on teaching the essential skills that the students need to master in order to successfully transition into high school, and to more importantly succeed in the “real world.”The middle school concept which Astumbo Middle School follows is one that evolves not only around the student’s academic needs but also around the student’s social needs. This concept encompasses the child as a whole and leads to a more productive citizen in the future, which in turn should transfer into higher student performance levels in both academics and social skills.

Astumbo Middle School will continue to provide programs that will meet the needs of the Middle school students.
This is the direction the School Improvement Plan hopes to accomplish. The objective of this plan is to improve the performance levels of students in Levels 3 & 4 as measured by the SAT10 test using 2008-2009 as a baseline. The scope of the SIP will include the following areas:Prepared…, Responsible…, and Productive.
Astumbo Middle School will continue to provide programs that will meet the needs of the Middle school students.
- Student Performance
The overall low norm referenced results that focuses on Performance Levels of Astumbo Middle School is what we want to improve. Using the Department of Education content standards and performance indicators, the SAT10 skills as guides; course outlines will be developed and implemented. The course outlines will be aligned with the SAT10 skills and content standards and will focus on skills that students need to master in order for them to receive a performance level score of 3 or 4. Pre & Post test will be also be developed as result of the course outlines. The Pre & Post test will be developed using the Priority Skills from the SAT10. To adequately prepare students for the SAT10 testing teachers will administer a practice test. The practice test that will be utilized is a test developed by teachers using priority skills from the SAT10. Furthermore, in order to promote student success the school will institute a strategy to connect with parents that focuses on student achievement through the use of the student/parent handbook, school letters to parent, and recognizing the success of students academically and socially through our Excellence in Learning Awards. - Student Behavior
Astumbo Middle School will be a pro-active in developing a student behavior plan and school-wide discipline policy that is aligned with the Guam law & board policy. The school implemented the “Student of the Month” rewards incentive for positive behavior for grades 6-8. Additionally, the school has successfully implemented the Play by the Rules in our seventh grade team time period and the concepts of the PBIS in all grades, which addresses character development. With ongoing training with the faculty & staff & implementation of school policies and programs, the discipline referral will continue to decrease.
A school-wide attendance policy that is aligned with board policy has been implemented. The school has implemented a system of keeping attendance records, which are carefully monitored by both the teachers and administrators. - School Characteristics
The impact of student achievement and employee attendance has a correlation with student success. In order for Astumbo Middle School to continue to increase student success the school will develop an employee recognition program that focuses on the increase of employee attendance. Through this program employees here at Astumbo Middle School will be able to receive awards and recognition for their attendance. When this program is implemented, the intent is to increase employee attendance which will result in the increase of the success of our students.
