Send Your Well Child To School

What if my child feels sick?

Please consider the following guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics, when keeping your child home from school.

Does the illness:

  • Prevent your child from participating comfortably in activities?

  • Result in the need for care that is greater than the staff can provide without compromising the health and safety of other children?

  • Pose a risk of spread of harmful disease to others?

Does your child have a FEVER?

Fever is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a temperature greater than or equal to 100.4F often accompanied by flushing, tiredness, irritability, decreased activity, and general changes in behavior.

If your child has a FEVER:

  • Keep your child home.

  • Call your child's Health Care Provider (HCP) if the fever persists.

  • Your child may return to school if fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine like as Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen

  • Returning to school too soon may slow recovery and make others sick

It is NOT within the scope of nursing practice to diagnose your child. Please contact your child's HCP if you are unsure of the nature of your child's illness.
