Food Resources for Families
Findhelp.org is a great tool to connect families with resources year-round.
BackPack Beginnings (3711 Alliance Dr, GSO, 336/954-7445, backpackbeginnings.org)
BPB is scheduling new and returning guests for their family market appointments at Family Market – BackPack Beginnings.
Lebanon Baptist Church, 4635 Hicone Road, is doing a public drive through food distribution on Friday, Jan 23, between 6-8 p.m.
The 65 GCS schools that receive BackPack Beginnings' weekend food bags each week should make sure they are given out prior to Friday dismissal.
BPB recommends connecting GCS families with One Step Further, Community Support & Nutrition Program | onestepfurther, which offers free food with no appointments needed, up to one shopping visit per week. Their building is in the parking lot behind Definition Church at 1806 Merritt Dr. Their open shopping hours are Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (weather permitting).
Greensboro Urban Ministry (305 W Gate City Blvd, GSO, 336/271-5959, greensborourbanministry.org)
Single adult and family shelters will remain operational throughout this winter storm. They will also provide warming space during the day. The City and IRC will provide White Flag warming space at 1st Baptist Church and continue to provide Pallet Shelters at Pomona Park.
As for food, their Potter’s House Community Kitchen will remain operational for breakfast and lunch. They are not yet sure if their Client Choice Pantry will be open next week. Greensboro Urban Ministry will make that decision on Monday. It is open Tuesday - Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. under normal conditions.
Follow them on Facebook and Instagram for their most up-to-date program services and closures.
Out of the Garden (OOG) Project (300 NC Hwy 68 S, GSO, 336/821-2450, outofthegardenproject.org)
In anticipation of students not going to school next week, they have maximized the amount of food they have sent to their Operation Backpack students at partner schools and included full boxes of cereal for each student. Yesterday and today, their truck also delivered enough bags of mandarin oranges to Title 1 partner schools so that every child in the school can take home at least 3 lbs. of produce.
In addition, OOG is holding a "pop-up" Fresh Mobile Market food distribution at their warehouse tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 23, from 3-5:30 p.m. The address is 300 Hwy 68 S, Greensboro 27409. Each family that comes will receive around 55 lbs. of produce, meat, bread, and shelf stable food until they run out of supplies. Families are not required to provide documentation or ID.
OOG will resume normal operations as soon as it is safe for their staff to be on the roads, and they are able to get the trucks out to recover food from grocery stores.
They highly encourage GCS staff, students and families to follow OOG on social media, as that is where they post updates on food distributions. They also update their schedule posted on the website. If there is power, and they can get staff in, they anticipate doing additional food distributions at their warehouse next week.
