World War I
Assassin of Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria-Hungary
Gavrilo Princip was an assassin who killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand who was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, along with Sophie, his wife, in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914. As a Slav nationalist, Princip belonged to a group of Serbian nationalists known as the Black Hand. The Black Hand group prioritized the idea to liberate Serbia from Astro-Hungarian domination.
I chose Gavrilo Princip because he was only 19 years old when he assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This particular moment struck me because many historians credit Princip and the assassination of Franz Ferdinand as a cause of WWI. My challenge was how to depict a 19-year-old who started WWI over a hundred years ago through my film. What I’ll remember about this project is how Princip's actions set off a chain of events that led to the July crisis and eventually WWI. However, his actions happened in the context of Europe and the alliance system. It's scary to think about how a conflict can escalate so quickly and draw other countries in, creating a world war. There are many 21st-century connections to this topic, one being that Ukraine is not a member of NATO, however, it is surrounded by NATO nations. If Russia were to accidentally bomb a NATO nation, the United States would have to respond due to the NATO alliance. Similarly, the United States has sworn to protect Israel. If Iran started a direct confrontation with Israel, the U.S. would most likely have to get involved.
