Inspiration
Over the summer I participated in a two week long workshop at NYU related to songwriting. The setup was that there were about 40 participants ranging from 15-50 years of age who were broken up into three groups. They would get prompts each day and have to write a song that night and come back to their group to share the song they had written. Assignments were collaborative. I was auditing the workshop, so I didn't participate with the rest of the group, but I got to go around and see all the different groups and what they came up with. It was really inspiring and I had a lot of fun and met some really talented people. The workshop was one of my main inspirations for my project.
Initial Work
During October, November, and December I finalized the idea for my project and how I would present it. I also reached out to the people I ended up interviewing and did some initial research on them to plan for those interviews. Once I knew for sure who I was going to be interviewing I listened to most of their music and did some foundational research about who they were and what they had done so far in their careers. Since the three people I interviewed are all still in the beginning of their careers there wasn't much information about them as people, so their music really became the vocal point of the interviews as opposed to what they've done in the industry. I also did some research about podcasts in general and how podcasts like the one I planned to make generally work. My favorite is called Song Exploder which I recommend.
Interviews
During the first week of IP10 I conducted the three interviews that ended up in my final project. I did one interview per day in the middle of the week, so I had one interview on Tuesday, one on Wednesday and my final one on Thursday. The first interview was with Anya Movius, then Sabrina Song and finally Coco Goupil. All of my interviews followed a similar structure with slight variations based on the research I did and the different things I knew about them. However, even though I was asking very similar questions I thought that all of their answers were unique.
I conducted all my interviews from my kitchen on zoom. I recorded the zooms and I additionally recorded the interviews on a phone with a special mic. I planed all the questions on paper and had the questions in front of me when I was conducting the interviews.
Organization
During February, I wrote transcripts for the interviews that I conducted in the first IP10 week. I also prepared for what I planned to do in IP10 week 2.
Editing
I edited the three interviews into three different podcast episodes and finished this website. I edited using D-script which is an editing website that creates a transcript of an audio that you upload. Then, you can edit the transcript and the audio will be edited along with the written part. Finally I uploaded the interview audios to garage band and added in the re-recorded questions that I asked and I also added in some music.
