Minimum Wage in the United States

Over the course of this year, I dedicated my IP10 project to researching minimum wage in the United States. Back in 7th grade, I was assigned a state and was told to research its minimum wage and whether or not a minimum wage worker could live off the state's minimum wage while paying living expenses. I was so invested in the project so when I got the opportunity to expand it this year, I took it! However, this time, I decided to research the same material but in all 50 states. In addition to this, I also wanted to look at the different opinions surrounding an increase to minimum wage because they could affect future outcomes of minimum wage. In order to guide my research and project, I established a guiding question. I followed this question for the entire time I was working and it helped craft my final product.

Driving Question:

What are the different perspectives on minimum wage policies across the United States, and how do they reflect whether a minimum wage worker can manage in a certain state while paying average living costs?

Why does this matter?

Understanding and supporting fair minimum wage laws is important because it ensures that everyone earns enough money to live comfortably. Even though minimum wage is not supposed to be a wage people live off of, sometimes they are the only options available for some people. This is why minimum wage jobs must be able to provide a sufficient living. When people are paid fairly, they can afford basic necessities like food, housing, and healthcare. Most minimum wage workers right now are not able to afford things like this. Fair wages also boost the economy because workers have more money to spend on goods and services. By advocating for fair minimum wage laws, we create a more just society where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Ultimately, it's about fairness and ensuring that hard work is rewarded with a living wage.
