I had to figure out what I was actually going to do for my project.
I started off by thinking about my interests, and made a list that included soccer, adventures, hiking, video games, and some others.
I thought how I could expand one of these into a project, and that is where I cut it down to adventure, and my first idea was to build something.
I decided not to build anything, and to focus on adventures that you could do in the city.
After realizing that it would be a little too much, I decided to focus on one adventure that you could do in the city, and I chose rock climbing from that list, and the reasons are listed on the home page.
After I figured out what I was doing for my project, the next step was to figure out how I was going to rate the sites.
I learned in Alumni Night that I should have variables and put them into an equation, so I got to thinking.
I figured out which variables I was going to use: price, average distance from public transport, number of climbs, range of difficulty on the climbs, and sanitation.
The next step in figuring out the ratings was assigning how important each of the variables were, and then giving each one a multiplier of a number, a decimal, to give it another number that was used to combine all the numbers into one final score.
From there I figured out the formula, which was: (Number of climbs)(10) + (sanitation rating out of 10)(50) + (range of difficulty out of 10)(50) - (price)(5) - (average distance from public transport).
The second aspect of the project was the places that I was going to do my calculations and measurements.Â
The first thing that I did was look up "rock climbing in NYC" in Google and going to Google Maps to see all the places.
I established a boundary of where I would no longer go to places, and making decisions such as leaving New Jersey out of the places, and some places in really deep Queens because it was basically Long Island.
From there I created a shortlist of all the places that I saw on the map and put it into my IP10 journal.
After researching each place to make sure I was able to go there and climb, I had ruled out a couple, such as Brooklyn Boulders because they were closed for renovations and Adaptive Climbing Group, which is primarily a place enabling people with disabilities to go climbing.
I made my final list, and then planned out when I was going to visit each place, whether it was during the March Madness, or it was going to be on my own time.
