The tennis racket has gone through many changes throughout history. From wood to Graphite racquets have been made of many things. I will be focusing on wooden racquets. There are three main phases of the wooden racquet.
Early lawn tennis racquets had many different shapes and designs. They were made by steaming a piece of wood and bending it around a mold(similar to my method). They were weaker compared to later models of the wood racquet.
Early 20th-century racquets had a lot of changes made between them and the early lawn racquets. The main problem with the lawn racquets was it's strength. 20th century racquets solved this issue by strengthening the throat, shoulders, and overall racquet frame. The throat was strengthened by adding a locked wedge which was a layered throat instead of one piece. The overall frame was strengthened by adding a piece of leather in between 2 layers in the frame and pieces of cloth were wrapped around the shoulders for stability
The laminate racquets have updated the strength and stability of the racket once again by using multiple layers in the frame of the racquet. the thin layer of wood were glued and bent cold without being steam. this allowed for more strength. the racquet had pieces of cotton on the shoulders for display as they were not needed for stability anymore.
