My independent project is to visit Desi restaurants across NYC, and provide a detailed description of area I visit. In doing so, I hope to capture an accurate picture of New York City's Desi (South Asian) immigrant communities and how they adapt to a constantly changing economy.
How did I do this?
I conducted specific field research in 3 neighborhoods, two in Manhattan and one in Queens. In addition, I also visited 3 specific businesses near my home in Soho.
Murray Hill, more famously known as Curry Hill, is located just above Gramercy on the east side of Manhattan on Lexington Avenue, between 25th to 30th street. It is lined with many Desi restaurants and stores.Â
Jackson Heights, also known as "Little India" is a multicultural neighborhood in Queens filled with Latin American, Nepalese, Tibetan, Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi immigrant owned food businesses. The stretch of 74th Avenue has a concentration of South Asian businesses
