I wanted to be able to have fun while creating a project so I decided to try making some movies that I would shoot on my iPhone. This would allow me to watch/review many movies and genres for inspiration including In Bruges, Inglorious Basterds, Dead Poets Society, When Harry Met Sally, and others.
Dead Poets Society
Genre: Drama
Directed by Peter Weir and Written by Tom Schulman
Oversimplified Premise: An English teacher (RIP Robin Williams) goes to a very traditional/strict boarding school and teaches poetry in creative and different ways.
Personal rating 3.5/5
Good movie, not my favorite. Felt like there were some abandoned elements that had potential. Has a very sad end/final 20 minutes.
Notable aspects for creating emotion: swelling music and broad/grand camera shots
Inglorious Basterds (intentionally spelled like that because there is an older movie called Inglorious Bastards)
Genre: Drama/War
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino
Oversimplified Premise: Two stories about plots to kill massive amounts of high-ranking nazis In WWII intertwine.
Personal rating 5/5
One of my favorite movies. I highly recommend this movie if you can handle some graphic/disturbing violence/content.
Notable aspects for creating emotion: very long takes and more isolated ambient sound than music
In Bruges
Genre: Dark Comedy/Crime/Drama
Written and directed by Martin McDonagh
Oversimplified Premise: Two hitmen travel to Bruges, Belgium after a botched hit to wait for the drama to die down, survive, and enjoy/despise the beauty of Bruges.
Personal rating 3.25-3.5/5
This one is a tough rating because in the first half of the movie, it is entertaining but almost nothing happens. It is mainly the two main characters having realistic and sometimes rambling conversations while developing character, but it is very slow. Yet, the second half picks up the pace and Is amazing. If the first half was about 15-20 minutes shorter, this movie would be a 4.25-4.5. I recommend this movie though. Expectation Warning: The tone is always dark, but it gradually gets more dramatic and tense and less funny.
Notable aspects for creating emotion: Long takes, pausing on facial expressions, orchestral music, muted colors.
When Harry met Sally
Genre: Romcom
Directed by Rob Reiner and Written by Rob Reiner and Nora Ephron
Oversimplified Premise: Two people who just want to be friends (and make it explicitly clear they do not want to fall in love with each other because it would show that it is impossible for men and women to be friends without being attracted to each other) keep meeting every couple of years and eventually fall in love. That is not a spoiler because it's a romcom from 1989 what else do you think is going to happen?
Personal rating 4/5
It is my parents' favorite romcom (my dad's favorites are this, then La La Land, then Crazy Rich Asians) and I liked it. It is weirdly not sappy and cheesy and held up pretty well. Also, if someone ever says "I'll have what she's having." it is from this.
Notable aspects for creating emotion: bright colors and natural music
