What will Orchestra Class entail?
7th grade students are eligible to enroll in Orchestra as an elective during the school day. This class will meet daily, and scheduling will be arranged by counselors. Instruments students may choose to play: violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students may be in multiple music classes as their class schedule permits (examples, band & choir or choir & orchestra). See the syllabus on our Class Info page for more details.
What will students learn?
Students will learn the basics of playing the a stringed instrument, will develop higher levels of technique, and the ability to play various pieces. Classes will focus on
• introduction and mastery of basic techniques
• learning new repertoire and consistent review of repertoire, polishing to a performance-ready level
• continued development of note reading, rhythmic fluency and other musical concepts
• preparing for performances and having fun learning together and making music together
Please do not purchase an instrument prior to speaking with the teacher. What seems like a good deal (a violin for under $200), will actually cause more trouble than value for your child. These "violin-shaped-objects" or "cello-shaped objects" are not actually violins or cellos, and are items of poor quality, not sufficient for proper learning. If finances are an issue, we have an agreement with a quality Music Instrument shop, or the school has a limited number of instruments available for use by students with financial need.
Recruitment for 7th Grade Strings will occur at the Intermediate Schools. All 6th grade students will receive access to the interest form from their Intermediate School. Please contact Grant Pfifer at gpfifer@gcsc.k12.in.us for more information.
