Tello

The Tello is the drone that we use for coding the most. We currently have 6 of them in our fleet. I usually have 2 students per drone.

I am trying out the different apps available for coding the Tello. So far we have used DroneBlocks, which works pretty well, and the newer Tello EDU app. My students seem to like the Tello EDU app better. The Swift Playgrounds app works with both versions of the Tello, but has many more functions for the EDU version, such as swarming! It has a nice tutorial to help introduce beginers to coding. I have not attempted using Scratch Online yet. All of these apps are free.

The Tellos use wifi to connect to your device, so it is a stable, reliable connection. Even when a team has to swap batteries, they can reconnect to their drone quickly and easily. This is one of the main reasons that I prefer using the Tellos over the Parrot minidrones.

A new browser-based coding program called Node-RED has just been released to work with the Tello, and the Tello EDU drones. Learn more about it HERE.
