One of the first tasks a tutor should do during the first session is to carry out an independent observation of the student to find out more about the student's literacy background and what the student can already accomplish.
The following are suggested activities for the initial meeting:
writer his/her/their name
copy words and sentences in target language
identify letters and sounds
identify basic sight words from cards
complete alphabet Cloze exercises
read simple sentences
write dictated simple sentences
The tutor can start with any of the following topics, depending upon the student's ability:
Handwriting: limbering exercises, printing via tracing, letter formation
Personal Information: core conversation, contact information
Family Vocabulary: immediate members, names, relationships
Alphabet & Numbers: increments of 5
Consonant Sounds: 5 at a time
Basic Calendar: Today's day and date
