Sight words are words that should be memorized to help a student learn to read and write. Sight words are memorized so that a child can recognize commonly used or phonetically irregular words at a glance, without needing to go letter-by-letter.
The Dolch Sight Words list is the most commonly used set of sight words. We assess all students in grades K-3 on their grade-level sight word knowledge.
The Fry Sight Words list is a more modern list of words, and was extended to capture the most common 1,000 words. Fry Sight Words are appropriate for youth and adults alike.
The sight words are each followed by a sentence using the word. The sentence is to help your student figure out the word through the context of the sentence.
Cloze sentences are sentences in which key words are deleted, covered up or blocked out; students must use context clues to determine the missing word.
