Fifth Grade

Week 6 (Last Week!)

Zearn

Click on the image to see how Zearn works.  Your child can log into classlink and do a search for "Zearn."  This is a math app that shows short videos to explain math ideas and allows for visual problem solving and opportunities for kids to complete math problems in an interactive way.  It includes built in help when kids are stuck with online learning from kids and teachers on the screen.  Have your child log in and show you this math app!

Week 5

"Broken Calculator"

Using the calculator on your phone, tell your child to pretend that the buttons 3 and 8 are broken. How can your child make the screen read 38 without using those buttons by using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division? The possible solutions are endless. One example could be 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 - 2. Have your child test out his or her solution.  To make it more challenging, try a three digit number the next time and switch out different numberes that are "broken!"!  This activity challenges your child to think more deeply about place value and gives a meaningful purpose for your child to consider how to use different operations.

"SKUNK" Math

This game works best with two or more people. You'll need a pair of dice (click HERE to learn how to make them if you don't have any), and each person playing will need a piece of paper and something to write with. Each letter represents one round of the game and all math for that round will be added up in the space below the letter. The goal of the game is to be the first player to get 100 points. The first player rolls two dice, adds up the numbers, and writes the total down on the game board below the S. The player can continue rolling as many times as he or she wants to add more points to this column. However, if the player rolls a 1 on either dice, all points in that column are lost! When the player decides to stop rolling, he or she should add up the points in that column, write the total, and then pass the dice to the next player. Play continues until each player has finished all the SKUNK rounds or until one player has scored 100.

Week 4

Frax

This is a great resource your child has access to through their device on ClassLink

Click on the Frax image to view a short video about this program.  Your child can log into classlink and do a search for "Frax."  Frax is an app that helps develop students' math fluency, particularly with fractions.   This app is game-based with fun challenges and frequent rewards to help keep students engaged while learning.  They will travel through space and complete missions that help them hone in on their fraction understanding.  As their mastery grows, they unlock new activities and also receive brief real time instruction.  Have your child open up and show you this app!

Week 3

Reflex

This is a great resource your child has access to through their device on ClassLink

Click on the Reflex image to view some short videos about this program.  Your child can log into classlink and do a search for "Reflex."  This is a great Math resource that helps kids learn their math facts in a fun and engaging way, playing games!  This program is customized to your child's ability level and will help build confidence and skills to do more complex math problems.  Students  can earn virtual rewards that give additional incentive to continue to play and learn!

Week 2

IXL

This is a great resource your child has access to through their device on ClassLink.

Click on the IXL image to watch a short video on how the smart scoring works for this program.  Have your child log into classlink and do a search for "IXL".  Once they open it up, you'll see lots of recommendations on the first screen with skills they can work on.  You can also search for skills in the search bar.  Have your child show you around!  They can earn virtual certificates and awards when they master skills.  This is a great practice tool to utilize!

Week 1

Math Fun with Dice & Food

Activities that support STAAR-Tested TEKS

Area Dice Game

You need grid paper (if you don't have any, your child can draw lines horizontally and vertically like the example above), 2 dice (click HERE to see how to make them if you don't have any), and two different colored crayons/markers.  This is a two player game.  Each player picks a color.  When it's your turn, roll the dice, and draw a shape with matching multiplication of the 2 numbers rolled.  For example, if they roll a 3 and a 4, they'd draw a rectangle with 12 squares (and write the multiplication problem in the shapes).  Each person takes turns doing this until either the time is up or you are out of space.  The person whose shapes take up the most amount of space/squares on the grid wins!

Cheez It or Rice Chex Exploration

You need any kind of squares for this activity, a piece of paper, and something to write with.  If you don't have square-shaped snacks, you can have your child cut squares out of paper.  Ask your child to build shapes with a Perimeter (total length of all four sides) or Area (total area inside the shape) that you give your child with the food/squares, and then write it next to the shape.  For example, you can ask them to come up with a shape with a Perimeter of 12.   You could then ask them to come up with a different shape with that same Perimeter.  You can also have them build shapes and then figure out the perimeter or area...Then of course, just for fun - Eat the Snack!
