What are intersessions?
Designated weeks scheduled throughout the school year:
Enrichment
Remediation
Small-group learning
Social-emotional learning
Project-based learning, study trips, skills workshops
Guest instructors from the community
Learning partnerships (4-H, Parks & Rec, VIMS, “Camps,” etc.)
Real-world application of content
Intersessions are optional. Students can sign up to attend one, a few, all or even none.
Below are informational points, modified from Hopewell Public Schools, regarding intersessions for students and teachers
Intersessions for students:
Six intersession weeks per school year (fall, spring, summer)
Optional, but all students may attend any or every intersession
Designed to appeal to student choice and interest
Intended to foster stronger relationships and engagement
Full day, with transportation and meals provided
Small-group, with embedded components such as reading, writing, and research
Students with disabilities (SWD) are invited to participate inclusively with accommodations provided
Intersessions are required to be FUN!
Intersessions for teachers:
Six (6) intersession weeks per school year (fall, spring, summer)
Teachers are required to teach one intersession week (per contract)
Teachers may choose to work up to 4 additional weeks ($1K per week)
Designed to appeal to teacher choice and interest; teachers can help to design and deliver intersession courses that appeal to them
Intended to foster stronger relationships and engagement
Teachers provided dedicated $ for course materials
Small student: teacher ratios
First semester ends before winter break
Intersessions are required to be FUN!
