Your overall study programme consists of multiple key elements. Being successful in art and design requires sustained energy, enthusiasm, curiosity and commitment, with the expectation that you attend all sessions on your timetable. (and use your independent studio time effectively)
Course - Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design
Studio Practice (Independent Study)
Tutorial
WEX, Enrichment, Work related study e.g trips / industry speakers
The Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design will provide you with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to progress to degree level study within the Creative Industries, apprenticeships or direct into employment.
The course provides an opportunity for you to explore, develop and test your creativity within a structure and environment which is stimulating and demanding.
A strong work ethic is required and developing your independent practice in a studio environment is a key way of preparing you for Higher Education and the workplace.
Independent Study is a fundamental aspect of your course and 100% attendance is expected. This has been timetabled on Mondays and Fridays within your college week. These are non-taught sessions and provide you with the opportunity to continue to develop, explore and consolidate your work, undertake WEX, live projects and much more.
As the course progresses, these sessions enable you to develop work of a more individual nature and build upon skills, processes and techniques experienced during taught sessions. Independent Study aims to promote a greater sense of self-reliance, self-motivation, maturity and independence, which are the essential qualities for any artist or designer.
Each week you will have a group tutorial on Wednesday AM, which is led by your tutors and is embedded within your timetable.
These sessions are part of your course and will help to support your personal development and progression to HE or employment.
The Learning Support Team can work with you to organise, support or reasonably adjustment resources to support your individual learning needs. The learning support team is based in the Student Hub on the 2nd floor. You will also be able to access support with personal statement writing and annotation during the 1-1 drop-ins that take place in the LRC.
‘Enrichment’ is a key component of the Level 3 Foundation Diploma programme.
There will be trips embedded within your Pathway which will be linked to your core programme of study, as well as activities organised by the College connected to careers in the Creative Industries. You are also encouraged to visit exhibitions and cultural events during the weekend or in your holidays. A regular newsletter called "Culture Vulture" will keep you up to date with what's on locally and nationally.
Sustainability & Creative Practice:
This course encourages you to be sustainable in the work you produce and the impact your activity has on our environment.
Contemporary creative practitioners do not only make ‘things’ but try to minimise the material impact of their own work. They also lead opinion, and design the world we inhabit, from our built environments to our digital spaces, from the clothes we wear to the conceptual and theoretical landscape in which we interact.
They develop our cultural reference points and social debates.
The content in this course gives us all the opportunity to engage in this pressing and complex area. There is no one specific approach to sustainability. Rather we want to encourage you to develop your own awareness of this agenda, find your own individual definitions and propose solutions for how to weave sustainability throughout your creative practice and engagement with the wider world.
