Effects
In production practice I threw together some clips that I had already saved on my hard drive and picked a cartoon that I liked, I then used the picture-in-picture effect from my research for the first time and edited them together. I liked the fast pace of the cartoon and thought that this matches the kind of music in the MTV logo (from my research) and my friend Sam's music that he makes at home. So I added a jungle song over it and edited it to that.
After making the video above I have decided on making a music video to one of Sam's songs, I contacted him and he said that he would have me round to film him for the video and pick what track I will use. I decided to pick this over the other ideas as it would be difficult to film in a record store and they could ask to be paid/say no to there being filming in their shop. This scene being an important one in the video I couldn't risk pre producing and filming it, therefore I decided to change the idea to do Sam's jungle song.
I also learnt how to do a glitch effect and when to use it, I discovered I could play a video then add the glitch effect and rewind the same video and begin playing it again where the video started glitching from in the first place. Here are what the two different glitched and non glitched effects look like. (Including picture-in-picture)
There is no need for a script in my project as it is an instrumental song. I also am not sure how the final video will look as of now due to the video being a large collection of videos therefore it will be difficult to story board anything as of yet. I will attempt to draw some shots that I would like to include in the video though.
I also played around with the idea of creating an audio visualiser that could pop up a few times in the video. As the song is not finished yet I decided to attempt to make one with a song from my favourite artist; I believe this test went well and the video looks somewhat like the album cover (left) in that the orange square is recreated in the audio wave. This effect is something that I will try to use again in the final video, and also make it slightly better.
Now I have the song and all the clips gathered including stock footage I have made an average poorly-cut music video that needs lots of after effects here I will talk about what skills I use:
For this shot I used the Split stretch tool to make the speed of the video in perfect time with the song, the Audio Waveform is cropped to the size of the fish eye and I will make sure to use fish eye shots in the background of picture-in-picture effects as makes the viewers attention towards the centre of the screen (the picture in the picture)
Here I have added an adjustment layer with Gaussian blur set at 45.0 I have synchronised the blur with the bass of the song, this adds more depth to the video and makes the song more impactful.
The different layers are PNGs of Sam's hand with the opening masked out and key-framed to zoom in showing the next shot, this transition seems difficult to viewers but is quite easy and is used twice in this video. It goes well in this part of the song and transitions nicely into the next shot.
Here a few effects are used, the blur in the background emphasises the bass hits like I spoke about earlier, this partners well with the picture-in-picture technique as the bass lasts a while meaning without the silver surfer the audience would be staring at a blurry clip for a few seconds, it also allows the viewer to focus on the central clip
For this shot I keyed out the black in the silver surfers head to transition really well into the next clip this is my favourite shot in the video. I also contradict the previous paragraph in that this shot has the blur effect over it briefly as the cartoon has a huge explosion and the surfer rides through it I thought the blur mixed with the gravity of the explosion works well
Here is the record PNG mask effect transition. This would be overkill if it was used more than 3 times I think. It took a long time to perfect this transition as the keyframes were very fiddly, after a rewatch of the tutorial and some persistency It eventually worked
Here I added the Deckstal logo I made a few weeks ago, I think this clip goes well repeated a few times and the logo looks very nice with the blur effect over the bass, it slightly resembles a spinning record from a few shots before, this is also enforced with the circular shape of the fish eye lens
This section of the video begins to include clips from Sam's favourite film 'La Haine' this particular shot is of the DJ scene where he scratches his records, I synced this up with where Sam scratches briefly in his song.
This zoom shot in La Haine really stood out to me as I watched it and I knew it would look good sped up in a video. I made it picture in picture to emphasise the speed and zoom and also transition into the title of the song in the next clip
This is where I used the Audio Waveform, I use this more when the bass is loud in the song as it moves a lot consistently throughout I also time it well with when the bass comes in to add some depth to the video, more quick cuts etc.
This shot in the film dips to white so I added a graphic thats white and the same size and made it picture-in-picture and zoomed in when the white flash happens this transitions into the shot below with the audio waveform
The plain white is quite refreshing at the end of the song as the rest of the video is hectic, I change this to black and key out the background every 4 bars for the outro of the video. It looks very good here as you can see the different notes being played in a chord as the chords change.
Here I attempted to use a different transition called morph cut, I thought it would work well at the intro to turn Sam into the 'album cover' but was too odd, I tried to lengthen and shorten it to work but in the end it needed to be cut out and left as a normal cut.
Here is my best example of the picture-in-picture effect in the video.
Here are the different versions of my music video, each version is from each day of editing, this shows how the project gets better day by day

I initially planned on using a glitch effect, one in which I learnt to do for this project but in the end decided not to as I couldn't find a suitable place in the video for it
