Students and parents often wonder how their student can meet all the requirements to graduate from Grand Blanc High School, and fit in band all 4 years. Hopefully this information will help you understand that YOU CAN take band for 4 years, meet all the necessary requirements to graduate, and get into the program or college of your choice when you graduate.
GBHS High School Band Program
The main part of the GBHS band program are the DAY BANDS. These are classes that meet during the school day, count as a VPAA credit for graduation, and are a continuation of the band classes students took in middle school. There are 3 different day bands.
Concert Band - mostly freshmen
Symphonic Band - sophomore, juniors, seniors
Wind Ensemble - students must audition to be in the Wind Ensemble. Mostly juniors and seniors.
9th Grade students should sign up for CONCERT BAND.
If you play a woodwind instrument (flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone) select Concert Band Woodwinds
If you play a brass or percussion instrument (trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, percussion) select Concert Band Brass/Percussion
Concert Band Woodwinds and Concert Band Brass/Percussion meet at the same time in the same room, so the Concert Band Kids all meet together at the same time.
MARCHING BAND meets outside the regular school day, but students also receive a grade and school credit for marching band. Many students particiapte in both a day band and marching band. Marching band does not count as one of the student's elective choices.
Marching band starts in May with spring rehearsals, and these rehearsals are a way for 8th grade students a chance to see what marching band is like before comitting to signing up for the ensemble.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ENSEMBLES
There are many different ways for students to get involved in after school extra curricular ensembles, and some of these groups are favorites among the students. Some of the extra curricular ensembles are:
Jazz Bands
Pep Band
Orchestra Pit
Winter Drumline
Winter Guard
Symphony Orchestra
