Clothing

The environment had a big affect on what the Native Californians wore for clothing. For example, Miwok men and women wore clothing made from bark, grasses, tule, and animal skins because there were lots to use for clothing. The Coastal Ohlone depended on the resources around them for clothing. For example, the Ohlone women wore skirts made from tule reed or grasses. The mountain Maidu did not wear that much in hot climate. The men wore a piece of deer skin on their hips or nothing at all. The women wore a double apron. In winter the Maidu wore moccasins on their feet and warm animal skins on their shoulders to keep warm in snowy weather. The desert men wore a piece of deer hide on their hips or absolutely nothing. The women wore woven caps on their heads. These were made from sage bark. The clothing of Native Californians was very different depending on where they lived.
