EARLY COMPLETION OPTION
Early Completion is a modified program option for exceptional experienced teachers who meet the eligibility requirements to complete the Gateway Induction program at a faster pace.
In California, the Early Completion Option (ECO) allows eligible teacher candidates to complete an induction program on an accelerated timeline. To qualify, a candidate must be recognized as both experienced and exceptional in their teaching practice.
An "exceptional teacher" is one who consistently demonstrates advanced proficiency across all California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTPs). This includes strong instructional planning, effective classroom management, inclusive practices, a reflective mindset, and a clear commitment to professional growth and student success. They show evidence of impact on student learning and operate with a high level of professional autonomy and ethical integrity.
“Experienced and exceptional” refers to a teacher who:
Holds a preliminary credential and has at least two years of successful, full-time classroom teaching experience;
Demonstrates mastery of foundational teaching skills and subject matter;
Requires minimal support to plan, teach, assess, and reflect effectively;
Has earned the respect of colleagues, students, and families for their instructional excellence and professionalism.
Mentors working with ECO candidates are expected to tailor their support, focusing on advanced reflective practice and inquiry rather than foundational skill development.
