Whole-Class Activities that Promote Numeracy

Clothesline Math - this practice structure works for anything where students can ORDER expressions. Students work together to place cards on a physical number line (clothesline) and then discuss why certain numbers are less than/greater than others. Cards with equivalent values can be stacked. All you need is a piece of string and some index cards to get started!

Talking Points Activity

This activity promotes student discussion using a rules and a specific structure for all conversations. Students read through statements as a group, and agree/disagree. Then they proceed back around the circle with agree/disagree/unsure and WHY but no comments from others. Then a final round of agree/disagree only with a recorded "vote" total. Then they move onto the next statement in the list.
