Description: A Number Talk is a purposeful whole class activity the goals of which are to build mental math and computational strategies, to develop the Mathematical Practices (for teachers and students) and to deepen understanding of mathematics. In other words, to develop number sense. This session will explain the who, what, where why and how of Number Talks. We’ll look at the differences in primary, elementary, middle, and high school Number Talks. And we’ll try to do a Number Talk ‘on the air’!!!

Description: A problem string is a powerful lesson format where all students learn, have access to the problems, and are challenged. The success hinges on the order, the discussion, and the teacher modeling student strategies to build connections. In this webinar, you'll experience strings of problems such as solving proportions, decimal operations, and solving equations. These number strings are great for moving students conceptually through addition to multiplication to exponents.

Nearly 250 patterns to use to work with your students to develop expressions to represent various stages. I've found it best to start with only showing stage #3, & have students mentally count (without going 1 by 1), then share out how they determine the total. This process allows them to break down the shape using finite numbers before they begin building expressions to represent how they "saw" the pattern growing.
