Housing and Interior Design is a project-based course that introduces students to the principles of residential design, space planning, and interior aesthetics.
Students explore how to apply Maslow's Hierarchy to meet functional requirements, client needs, and design elements that intersect to create effective living spaces. Emphasis is placed on both creativity and technical application.
Throughout the course, students learn foundational design concepts including color theory, balance, proportion, scale, rhythm, and emphasis. They analyze floor plans, evaluate traffic flow, and apply space-planning strategies to residential layouts. LiveHome3D is the primary digital design tool, enabling students to create scaled floor plans, room layouts, and 3D visualizations.
The course culminates with students creating a mock interior design company and building a professional website portfolio using Google Sites. This portfolio showcases their design philosophy, project work, and rendered layouts. As part of the course’s culminating art show experience, students create a small 3D display, company-themed merchandise, and a personalized 3D printed QR business card.
Major projects include client-based design scenarios where students must interpret needs, create functional solutions, and justify their design decisions. Students gain experience selecting materials, furnishings, finishes, and layouts that align with both aesthetic goals and practical constraints.
By the end of the course, students will understand how interior environments are planned, designed, and presented professionally, preparing them for further study in design, architecture, or related creative fields.
The course emphasizes:
Design thinking and problem-solving
Client-centered planning
Digital floor planning and layout development
Professional presentation skills
Visual communication and portfolio development
