Homework Guidelines:
As we transition to the new schedule, in an effort to develop a consistent climate with regard to homework, the Standardized Homework/Assessment Focus Group has compiled the following guidelines. Please be advised these guidelines are considered a starting point and it is our intention to seek feedback and reevaluate the efficacy of this list throughout the 2019-20 school year.
- For homework to be valuable, then it must be “brief, relevant, and provide valuable feedback.”-Steve Ventura (Author & Consultant - Advanced Collaborative Solutions)
- Homework shall be given due dates that correspond to the dates that your class is scheduled to meet. Students are welcome to submit assignments early if they choose.
- It is the shared responsibility of students, parents, and teachers to communicate if a student is having difficulty completing homework. This communication will provide opportunities to support individual student needs.
- Teachers shall be mindful that not all students have the same resources at home to complete homework. Accordingly, the high school will work with families to make the necessary accommodations.
Assessment Guidelines:
Students will not be required to take more than two summative assessments in a given day. If a student already has two assessments scheduled on the same day, they will have the option to reschedule the third assessment. If the student wishes to reschedule a test, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher via email at least 24 hours prior to test administration:
- If a student has more than two summative assessments on the same day and would like to reschedule one of them, he or she is required to email the teacher at least 24 hours in advance to seek a solution.
- The teacher has the option to assign an equivalent alternate test if the student misses the original.
- Assessments should not be administered on the same day to students who are participating in state-mandated testing (ex. Keystones, PSATs, AP exams).
- Makeup for student excused absences will follow “Makeup Policy” in the GVHS Student Handbook.
Expectations for homework and assessments will be reviewed throughout the year.
