Ontario’s Ministry of Education Policy on using Personal Mobile Devices in Schools
Did you know Ontario’s Ministry of Education and YRDSB recently revised their policies on using Personal Mobile Devices in schools? A personal mobile device is any personal electronic device that can be used to communicate or access the internet, such as, but not limited to a laptop, cellphone, tablet or smart watch. All mobile devices must be turned off or set on silent mode during the instructional time.
We want to support student achievement and well-being by keeping students focused on learning by removing distractions.
Students who have their cell phones turned on in class without an educator’s permission, will be reminded to turn it off or set it to silent mode. In some cases, a student might be required to hand in their mobile device. Parents/guardians may also be notified. Let’s all do our part in creating a caring, safe and inclusive learning environment!
All assessment, evaluation and reporting in Ontario schools is based on the policies and practices described in Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation, and Reporting In Ontario Schools, First Edition, Covering Grades 1 to 12 and Kindergarten.
