I used the notes of Khamaj Thaat Raag and used a pedal, which is a feature of this Raag. I also used instruments that are relevant to this form of music. Most sounds in this composition are synthesized!
An example of the Beatles being innovative is using ABA form. It is innovative because it is unconventional for pop music in the 1960s.
The Beatles were innovative in how they used sound effects. It was innovative for the time because they used both practical objects to make the alarm clock sound as well as an orchestra to record a riser.
I used the whole tone scale and chromatic scale to improvise this piece based on a theme designed by Zihan (we worked together). I used musical features of Debussy such as scales and unconventional modulations.
Debussy challenged his context to create a new impressionist and fluid musical style by using the whole tone and chromatic scale, non functional harmony, changing (often deliberately vaguely sounding) time signatures, dreamy atmospheres, and a combination of eastern and western musical styles such as pentatonics. His music also tell very imaginative stories though not explicitly expressed in the music, instead created in the general mood and feel.
Who is the musical rule breaker who inspired this composition?
Miles Davis
Why did you choose this person?
I would like to attempt composition of a genre different to what I usually listen to. I also like jazz.
How did you follow their example in your own work?
Trumpet, unconventional ensemble, well crafted melody, dissonance, relaxed tempo.
What challenges did you experience during this project?
Articulations and quantizing was difficult as sampled instruments do not have the dynamic range nor the flexibility of real players. Logic pro is bad at quantizing swing.
How successful have you been?
I am fairly satisfied with my work.
What would you do differently if you were to start again?
I would put more effort on harmony.
Musicians challenge their contexts by using unconventional harmony, tone and instrumentation and by inventing new sounds, an example of this can be found in Debussey's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune.
In this example the composer used his whole tone scale, chromaticism and melodies that have no harmonic root. The orchestra is also utilized differently, with strings accompanying woodwinds.
