Avant garde music refers to experimental and innovative approaches to composition and performance, often challenging conventional musical norms. It embraces unconventional sounds, structures, and techniques, frequently incorporating dissonance, atonality, and electronic elements. Originating in the 20th century, it seeks to push boundaries, emphasizing artistic freedom and originality over traditional frameworks of harmony or form. Key figures include John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Pierre Boulez.
I explored Stockhausen's textual scores such as "Setz die Segel zur Sonne" (Set sail for the sun) through performing it in groups, I also explored graphic scores and composed our own in groups.
Setz die Segel zur Sonne
Wonder. Bullet. I checked to make sure he was still alive.
The Program:
At first we stood around and looked like we were thinking to represent "WONDER", Jason then used the keyboard to make a "BULLET" sound.... and then Jason almost dies, so Eric goes to make sure he was still alive.
We then played the first graphic score, we then had to "SWAP" instruments and play the previous graphic score in reverse.
How are the musical elements and features described or referred to in the styles experienced?
The musical elements are broken or pushed to the limits, such as not giving instructions on pitch, tone, tempo, rhythm, etc. The compositions also do not need to follow conventional scoring rules such as using a staff with a clef, key, and time signature.
What role does improvisation play in the styles experienced?
The lack of instructions in a graphic score or text composition means players need to make decisions on various parts of the score. If rehearsal is forbidden, the player will need to compose the specific notes themselves, which is improvisation.
Why do contemporary art music musicians use frameworks when improvising? / How do contemporary art music musicians use frameworks when improvising?
Avant garde musicians use frameworks to make their performance fit the intentions of the composition and (if ensemble) to be able to play cohesively with each other.
What are the stylistic features and constraints of the improvisation frameworks experienced?
Musicians often focus on timbre, texture, and collaborative rules. Exploring extended techniques (for example sul tasto, harmonics) is a common way musicians break the rules of conventional music performance. Musicians also listen very closely to each others' playing to ensure they are playing as cohesively as possible.
How are approaches to improvisation similar or different across the avant garde styles experienced?
Different styles have contrasting amounts of freedom, while text scores let musicians make their own choices on most aspects of the elements of music, especially tonality, timbre, rhythm, and time/tempo, styles like serialism can be extremely limiting and each instruction is to be executed exactly as written on the proper musical notation.
What are the requirements for successful avant garde improvisation?
Musicians need to have a deep understanding of their instruments to be able to produce a desired effect. Creativity and open-mindedness is also crucial to successful avant garde improvisation. Musicians also need to be very sensitive to sound and be able to hear other players' playing to self-adjust.
