The principal aim of Drama in Middle School is to help students develop into confident and sensitive communicators. Through the exploration of theatre arts and performance, students learn a variety of transferable skills including collaboration, cooperation, self-awareness, communication, responsibility, focus, concentration, critical thinking, and creativity. These skills underpin practical work and are an integral part of development and attainment of drama techniques.
The course is designed to be a self-contained curriculum supporting all participants as well as promotes the development for students who intend to study Drama in High School. Units follow a thematic approach, successively building upon transferable and drama skills. Using drama processes and practical work, students are guided in a secure environment to experiment, explore, create, develop, rehearse, and respond. Practical work involves the students in performing in both informal and formal ways to their peers consistently throughout the course. Students also maintain a reflective journal and complete task-specific written work that is directly related to their practical work.
Middle School students have the opportunity to participate in Drama Club, which does not require an audition and is open to everyone regardless of experience. Middle School students also can have the opportunity to audition for Theatre productions which involve students in a professional process model, and roles are cast through an audition process. These programs run after school and provide the opportunity for students to further develop and hone Drama skills, techniques, and knowledge. They require a high degree of commitment for the rehearsal period.
