S.W.O.T analysis of skills and knowledge to be able to choose a project that is right.
Right now I have a clear understanding of what I'm capable at. Main areas are illustration and character design. I can sketch super quick, I'm great at line control and when it comes to my art it can be presented as clean and fluid. I have access to many areas of art like traditional and digital, when summed up. These can help with experimentation throughout the project. I also have a lot of documentaries and videos scattered around the internet, having the internet can help me find sources that I can use and analyze.
I never managed to make my own audio, this can be any type of sound, not just music. I also have a problem with not showing my progress more than I should, not showing different variations of my character design. I barely explained some changes within design choices too. Sometimes I don't properly analyse certain parts in detail too.
I can experiment with learning audio, especially imputing the audio if choosing an animation based project. We have audio recorders or my own personal device's microphone. I have access to many materials from online and craft shops incase my project is making based. I have already from work experience, started to layout character design to show progress, meaning I'll start doing that more and to not be afraid of mistakes. Also acknowledging my weaknesses, I will start to take screenshots/use obs or timelapse each stage of work. Showing a lot of my work more often, an aim of 6-8 visual developments, especially not leaving out even the smallest thing that will contribute with my project
The bus can sometimes be late or extremely early, this can stop me from getting to college. If my project is made in computer programs, It can be hard for me to access it at home. I also get sick sometimes stopping me from progressing.
Idea 1 - game posters
Summary of idea: Looking at game posters and games to see what all of them have in common. Experimenting with colour, perspective and layout. I would even step out of the game posters and start diving into some of the history and artists of posters to help get inspired. I would make posters for current games, looking at different mediums and then start making my own for a character/world from a made up game.
I'd want to dive into the research of poses, different poses that characters make or the composition of posters and how I'd put characters in it.
https://www.deviantart.com/die-hand/art/layout-posing-15913230
If I'm going to make a poster, I'd want it to be influenced by artists that have made posters. The different art styles, the way they make posters and what they've worked with.
Color theory is an important thing to learn, this can help create eye-catching posters. It would help with understanding posters when it comes to their colour choices.
Idea 2 - Character Animation (Showing a character's personality and story through animation)
Summary of idea: I could make an animation of a character, showing their personality through movements and facial expressions. As well, looking at the different ways of animating, like traditional, digital, rigging etc. I would start Researching what animations that are already in game/film/media that can inspire the outcome for the character. I also want to critique certain animations positively and negatively.
Taking inspiration by the way character designers have layouts with character expressions, I could reference this.
Most artists in the industry when it comes to film do this, only animating the facial expressions. It helps give a clear example of how the character will be animated and shown throughout the movie only by quick test snippets.
I could also use this to help me create my character and to understand them.
Idle animations are to capture character personality, these animations can be for games usually when someone has left their character for a long period of time.
The most fun way of showing a character can be through film, this is different from idle animation or test animations. This could be a looping animation of a character, showing their environment and story or it could be at least 50 seconds to 1 minute, 20 seconds. The possibility of own song creation can happen too, this can help create a world for the character and make it feel personalised.

Idea 3 - 3D modelling backgrounds
Summary of idea: This would be looped animations or rendered scenes of backgrounds, it would be a scene with no characters and focus more on background. I could build an environment and perhaps a character. The whole thing would be 3D modelled and I'd learn more of 3D modelling, colour and correct mapping. If I can as well, I'd add animation of small details. I could also add music to this project to show the vibe of the environment.
Some artists do 3D turn arounds, fully rendered models and a video to show their final projec turning around. This helps shows detail and would help me make slight progress when it comes to rendering, using it as a practice.
I could do this with assets not just character models.

Different softwares matter, experimenting with what I'm comfortable with. These would be the chosen ones:
Zbrush is accessible on college devices, this is a software I haven't used yet. It is a great software for sculpting and it's a bit more in the artistic area than blender would be. It also has features like blender.
Blender is a program I'm very familiar with yet still lack the very skills for it. It's a starter program as it has a lot of variety to use, it can be easy to learn.
Nomad Sculpt is another software used commonly on iPad, this is an easy sculpting app that many people use to create models for characters or 3D printing.
There's many artists on Instagram and X that show a lot of their work. A lot are known to stream and upload their work.
Using these artists as inspiration will help with progressing.
WHY THIS IDEA?
I chose to focus on making a short animation, like an introduction to a game. It will be in my own style and I will mainly focus on the actual animation more than the game. Although, I still need to expand on the theme, characters and overall setting for the animation to even be made. I chose this one out of the 3 ideas to work on my motivation and this would give me a lot to work on which I perceive to make me keep going. I also want to explore the themes that I've noted down, to create a complex character that is misunderstood in a complex setting such as romance. This also tied with my experimenting in the horror area, as I usually limit myself to cute approaches. The whole idea is something that already gives me a direction to follow yet also challenges me to create something within the time frame I have and to experiment with designs and story. This was also chosen as I'll be able to have access to everything at home.
I did not go with the other ideas because I believe even with a lot of practice, the idea of a fully rendered piece of a 3D model is a bit too overwhelming for me, my skill level is way too low that I won't be able to make something great or enjoyable for even myself. I want to expand on a skill I already have yet have been not using it at all in any of my past units or my personal life anymore. I also didn't do a poster, it would've been my second choice yet, I knew it had strong positives just like the 3D model one. The reasoning for not choosing this one was just due to the simplicity of it, I really want to challenge myself but also not go overboard with a project I know I wouldn't be able to perfect in the time frame I have.
The secondary research I wanted to look further into animation, more about animating in twos and seeing if I wanted to incorporate that into my work. I also in general want to look at animations that inspire mine and to talk about what I might like, hate or take from the animation. This will help me develop further with what I'm going to animate like and also help me with how they structure a short film/animation. I will go in more detail further in the FMP.
Poppy Playtime’s short cartoon animation introduces the new characters for the game, this is to build an environment for the game, making the plot feel like it’s a real life situation. It starts with new characters intro, showing each character and then
Poppy Playtime’s cartoon is a short film, my main inspiration for this project. I like that they introduce the game with a horror filled short episode of the game, of course this makes more sense with the theme of it being an old toy company that has ultimately failed with safety precautions.
I liked the general aesthetic of the game, it has a colourful youthful palette and the whole layout really gives off that old VHS type feeling. It is like a VHS tape for the kids in the universe that love these mascots, this is the explanation for the designs as well. Being a toy company they want smiley creatures that represent the childhood of people, children when they just enter the world with youth and with the creatures having certain identities that children would connect with.
Although, I won't go down this category of horror. It's the close up scenes of eeriness and the youthfulness of it that I appreciate. In a certain scene, Catnap the purple cat near the end, has close up of the mysterious gas. This is just a great scene as it is rendered differently since the art style is now more realistic, this is to show how these toys were real in this universe. This is great way of breaking the 4th wall of the show and also developing the real situations that happened in the game.
EDNÖRA is a 2D animated film, the reasoning I put this in is due to the fact it is a student's film which relates to what I'm doing. This was made by Joyark Toons.
The animation's story is also what made me enjoy this short film, the story is about a young witchy wolf called 'Jaizybel Ednöra' who is collecting a wisp, the story shows her progressing through the forest trying to run towards a wisp that's escaping her. In the end, she catches the wisp yet is covered in snow and she gets cornered by many other wisps who turn from a cold blue to red to show their anger. It ends around there with her surrounded by angry wisps.
This is a very strong story, it's a quick and snappy short film as it doesn't have a lot of speech. This is giving me the idea of not having a lot of speech, or none at all since it would help me focus on the visual story narrative.
I really enjoyed the scenes of EDNÖRA, the character being in clear focus due to the light that's shinning mostly on the character instead of the whole background. Lighting is such an important tool in story-telling as it's a great use for symbolism or a way to create a focus point. Light can also change the mood of a story which is definitely what I want to do.
The backgrounds in general are breath taking, depending on my exact storyline and environment that my project's going towards I will take EDNÖRA'S beautiful open areas as references.
Jackie has many tutorials, they focus on film and character. Her tutorials will be used in further research for help.
Short animated film called 'MISMATCHED' made by Jackie Droujko a quick story about a girl getting ready for a day out with her friend. Having a great outfit at the start, she slowly realizes maybe that's not the right style for the occasion. Throughout the video she asks her friend by texting her each style she's chosen. Her friend doesn't reply at all, so after many styles and clothes being flung everywhere
This animation has a lot of colour, music and personality which is why I think it’s a perfect example of what I’m inspired by. The animation itself is smooth and all coloured, this is because most of the actions are less dynamic and more still which is something I want to put into my final project’s animation. I’m not looking for a lot of movement but still enough to execute the story. I’ve noticed that this animation also shows the story by using text messages as a way of narrative as well. This is a creative and intuitive way of expressing what’s going on without actual spoken dialogue.
My main point of using this as an example for inspiration for my project is the song and audio fluctuating depending on what's on the screen. Good example is when she asks kawaii and the sound effects change into a cute wow voice (0:38) which changes the atmosphere heavily. I love the use of sound in this video, by YUI JUNE and noerby.
The storyline itself is supported by all of these things. It’s a simple scenario but it has a lot of personality in it despite being extremely short. The whole animation is easy to follow and has a lot of character, this is due to the scenario being very relatable for a lot of people and the situation is such an annoying experience with people. Having a scenario that is relatable makes the characters and whole animation more enjoyable, this is a technique that’s been used in storytelling for films, TV and other media. It helps make the character or even the story just much more relatable, this can be in a very serious setting to almost a comedy setting.
Walten files is a growing YouTube series that is heavily inspired by many indie horror games, specifically mascot horror as well. Posted on the channel Martin Walls, the premise of it is a children's restaurant that have animatronics, inspired heavily on FNAF. It has a story that is incredibly horrifying with the amounts of murder and supernatural.
A very long film, focusing more on episodes rather than a movie. Its format is 4:3 i.e. 1.33:1(768 x 576) aspect ratio.
I like how specifically the 4th episode of this series, they start to experiment more with animation. This gives so much life to the characters and makes them seem actually real rather than the very quick frames of characters and illustrations.
The audio design in this series is great, giving another VHS tape-like approach with distortion of people and children's voices. Also the music sometimes just has such an old feeling as the first part presents this great with real life footage as well.
Skipping through some of it, it shows a lot of heavy story telling through scary images to well animated scenes that show the strong horror aspects of the episode. One of the best scenes being one of the main characters called .. crawling out from 3 graves he made just after his tragic car accident with his coworker's children inside. I personally love this part as there's just a quick cut to it and him looking at the bag that is covered in blood, showing the loss of innocence and youth being completely destroyed by reckless behaviiour. It's such an eerie and overwhelming part in the film that It really inspires me to create moments like that.
Last thing, near the end is a supernatural being that communicates with the deceased. This is due to the lore having setienent robots that can communicat ewith the spirits, even without the lore involved, the clear thought put into creating this scary and unknowing atmosphere is impressive. With the creature moving slow but just human enough to freak the audience out.
The primary research I wanted to analyze and play was DeadPlate as It's my main inspiration for the horror. For more research further on, was to animate videos that I will take of real people and to use them as reference. Also focusing on scenery too, this is for the backgrounds for my animation, to get an idea of how the background will look when I add it in for the final animation, experimenting with different background looks. I would also try looking around town to see which places would be great for a date and ask feedback about where I should set my story. After I've gotten primary research about my scenery, I would want to create ideas with it and then
I've decided to play DeadPlate to have a starting point with my research and to explore this game more in depth. I haven't properly played DeadPlate before.
What's DeadPlate?
DeadPlate is a 2D restaurant tycoon themed, RPG horror game. It has many other elements like point and click and visual novel. Set in 1960s, France, the story of a lively waiter named Rody trying to make as much money as possible in a week at a fancy bistro owned by successful chef named Vince.
Why DeadPlate?
DeadPlate is a huge inspiration because of the sudden horror, I enjoy the hinted queer love Vince has and the way he cannot express it properly. It's very psychological yet does involve heavy amounts of gore and violence.
When I played DeadPlate I had started with the tutorial, apparently the full game would take me at least 1 hour to complete so I tried to play as much as I could.
Here in the video of the gameplay, I play game one and It's a very simple progression for a game. You have around 7 days to do this over and over again yet it gets faster and harder for each day.
Although the game is great in it's mechanical features, the story is what hooks people in.
The story revolves around the main protagonist called 'Rody' who has a lack of survival skills, his apartment is all trashed and it shows how he doesn't have time to care for himself. The whole time he's in love with a girl, he's too naive to understand she doesn't reciprocate any feelings back at the moment.
Vince, who owns the fancy bristo, has high excpetations when it comes to his restrauant. Though, his relationship with Rody is very tense and there sometimes very close moments.
Rody gets suspicious of Vince after some time due to Vince's strange behavior, and this leads to a nightmare Rody has. Vince's behavior keeps getting weirder, he takes care of Rody yet his old newspapers that all involve Vince's restaurant all say that Vince doesn't have any kind of respect for his workers.
Rody ignores everything and then decides to talk to Vince after finishing his work, he talks to Vince about his goal about being with a girl called Manon, but Vince can see how Rody is trying way too hard. Going back home, he has another nightmare about him being served as raw packaged meat.
When going back to work, he finishes it yet hears strange sounds from the freezer. He gets distracted and finds more information about Vince.
There are multiple endings but the most popular known ending is Vince inviting Rody to work more even after him getting his money. Rody also gets a call from Vince asking him to come to his party. When Rody arrives he talks to some guests and also goes into Vince's room to find the freezer key.
This leads to the final part where he visits the freezer to find out that Vince has actually kept his lover Manon as freezer meat and her locket was found. Vince walks in and knocks out Rody and when he wakes up, he's tied. Vince gives him time to escape so Rody uses matches to quickly burn off the Rope. This leads to them fighting eachother, Vince finally rips Rody's ear off. Vince starts explaining his intentions which then Rody starts attacking him and burns down the building.
I think the intentions of this psychological part was written really smart. The big plot twist of his actions and how inhumane Vince is depicted it's chilling and smart.
Vince cannot taste food, so he tries his best to make his dishes perfect. The thing was, a critique did say he had plain dishes, no love put into them. This creates a terrifying situation for Rody and Manon as he starts targeting them and tries hard to understand the love that Vince and Manon have and tries to put them into a dish to make it made with love. Vince obviously started to feel romantic a bit towards Rody but his feelings for his passion that he so truley wants to experience as a normal human being had taken of his actions. This creating a very strong relationship between him and Rody where none of his past co-workers had with him, now heavily impacted Rody with a huge betrayal.
When I think about what I could investigate more, I think about mental health and how it's portrayed in media. I feel like it's not something that should be demonized but more of a problem that can be worsened when overlooked, if not understood how can you help people?
I want to show the side of mental illness where it's used to create tension and horror but also the cause and problems that people experience.
I've decided to use procreate dreams as, you can edit on this as well. I'm going to show some animations I made, experimenting with what I can do in it. I've followed some tutorials for the app and for animation so I can start practicing.
The reason I'm using both is so I can easily import content for example, backgrounds. Since they're both made by the same company, it's easy to import pre made animations from procreate into dreams incase Dream's limited UI can effect with my work. (due to procreate dreams being relatively new).
I was trying out doing my own animation, I did not use a tutorial and I wanted to do this by myself with my own experience. My own experience has just been me animating ever since I was young, so I do have experience but I haven't been animating for a while, so this is the perfect opportunity to start practicing again. Even if It's a simple tutorial, this will help me understand the fundamentals of animation in a bit more detail.
This animation is a small animation showing progress of a man doing a small action, this is to practice drawing humans and animating them since I will do minimal animation due to time I have, this is a great time to experiment here.
Here I'm following a tutorial to animate a fluid bouncy ball, this is so I can start simple and also use this animation to test the software itself. I've decided to animate frame by frame , this is because It's the most easiest for me and perfect for my style of being sketchy when I animate.
This is a common tutorial people use to practice/warm-up/begin with animation. It's a great exercise as it shows an easy way of creating fluid motion with little details that create a more lively feeling. It's a great animation tutorial that can be accessed anywhere.
This is me using the tutorial to show I can use Procreate Dreams, a simple tutorial can also help me get used to the UI in procreate dreams.
I do each stage to show my process. For this example, I create frames to indicate where this ball will bounce. The animation is super choppy, you'd see this in a storyboard. (I started with 12 Fps)
Here we add "in-betweens" this makes the animation way more smoother, by adding frames between the primary frames from before.
We add more in-betweens and it's more smooth, although that's a great thing, when it comes to objects thinking about the phsics of it, you wouldn't expect it to be a smooth ball that has no bounce to it.
This was a mistake since I accidentally put the wrong frame of the squish effect after the impact of the ball. This created the bounce/squish effect but made it look very unnatural when it hit the imaginary floor.
I fixed that easily, I made sure that the ball was now immediately going to squish due to force of impact and I also added small movements of when it goes up, making it look like it stretches when going up.
In the end it looks like the tutorial and now I have an example of an animation on Procreate Dreams.
For audio, I will focus on using apps that I already know I can use without feeling intimidated, as music isn't my strongest area. I've already played around with BandLab before and I want to take this struggling area more forward as it'll help make my final animation stronger.
Making your own sound effects seem so fun, as there's no correct way to make a sound, you can experiment as much as you want. These ones include a bird, he uses fake or real feathers and flap them violently to create a flapping noise.
Here I used assets from kinemaster another app listed below that I'll be using if I am stuck. I did this by adding the downloaded boing noise sound effect and carefully putting it into place.
Here I did this by recording myself in Bandlab and I made a boing sound effect. I did this by saying bing and making the pitch higher. I thought It'd be easier to just edit this in kinemaster again as kinemaster has a layout that's super easy to use when editing for quick things.
I wanted to make my own sounds and then use presets from YouTube or other sources, this is to show the difference in both ways.
In conclusion I think both are great but premade sounds would help me benefically, to get the audio part done. These audios are easy to find on YouTube and they aren't bad if used correctly.
I liked the one I made myself but it would just take more time especially for longer audio clips.
Toonsquid can be later used for other animations that I might not be able to achieve on procreate dreams, although dreams is great it can take up a lot of storage and toonsquid does not have this problem. Toonsquid also has great graphs.
The are also listed incase the editing on Procreate Dreams doesn't want to work.
My idea is a short animated film that is an intro to a game, specifically focusing more on the animation. The game will not be playable or even made, yet it will have a short explanation of what it would be if I did create it, this is to also help me come up with the story of the intro. Not many people think about this idea and rarely do I see this part of games be talked about, it gives my short film a relevance to games too.
My primary research is all to support my further research with the theme, story and characters. Also animation, this is to strengthen the FMP. Especially the mindmap, as it dives deep into what I can achieve and get out of the idea. The more research I do, the more I do talk about music and audio as I slightly do talk about it when talking and analyzing the few animations I put up as examples for secondary research.
My test pieces are great practices and help show my abilities with animation already however through the use of tutorials I can expand this skill further and try more to help with fluidity.
In conclusion, all of my current test pieces and research can back up for this project and when I start doing my further research. I will do a short animated film that has romance and horror, with the mental illness being in explored in detail.
This year I have learnt many variety of works that I have never done before. This can be from audio to 3D modelling. I think due to the time frame I had and not making sure to keep track of what I was doing each day, I can say that some parts weren't developed further than a basic level of understanding. I have a great knowledge on art and animation, which I enjoy doing outside of college. I now strive to create a short animated film with sound. To summarise, without sound it won't convey the story properly giving me the opportunity to work on this skill and to expand it as much as I can whilst I expand my skill with animation.
The project aim is to create a short animated film to a game. The point of this is to also expand my skills in the animation and storytelling field. I want to be able to create a short animated film about romance and horror , exploring the genre/theme in detail and looking how I could create a story with this theme. I've already evidenced a lot with this theme with small research, a mindmap and a dive into the game DeadPlate. I definitely am going to expand my research both primary and secondary when it comes to these themes. Thinking about taking photos of locations to help me create the story and researching characters that will relate to this. I have access to my apple products (Apple pen, iPad, iPhone) and all are linked. I have access to all of my services from the apps that will help me creatively to Google services. I will present the final project in digital form by uploading it onto YouTube, I do expect the film to at least have a storyboard and audio as I do realize my time is limited especially when it comes to animation.
I will experiment with my ideas and make sure I keep analysing my every step, as my process is very important. This can be from character design to environment, knowing where my universe for this game will take place and play out. Since I am not attempting at making a game, I solely need to focus on the concept of it to initiate my animation. Documenting this and making ideas along the way will show proof of me having thoughts and acting on them. To cooperate with others, using google forms to help expand ideas and getting criticism will help immensely to make sure my animation can have a story that was properly thought out and reviewed.
At least a Storyboard with some movement, this whole project must have the animation part in it. I also think that there should be audio, sound effects.
A fully coloured animation, this includes characters and other objects. Also coloured backgrounds.
Perhaps small concept art for what the game might look like, for example the introduction screen after the animation.
An actual game, there will be no game for this project as we are focusing more on the theme and genre. So I do not need to make a game for this.
This section provides you with an opportunity to outline your planning and organisation over a period of weeks and the activities you will need to carry out in order to successfully complete your project in the agreed time frame. The more time and thought you give to planning your project, the more successful it is likely to be.
It is important that you consider how you will balance ambition, time and realism in the realisation of the project. You should also include what you are going to do, how you will do it and by when. Remember to include: time spent sourcing materials and other resources to conduct research, seek feedback from tutors and peers, and identify when you will carry out independent study.
