Positive Behaviour and Attitude

This policy aims to guide and encourage positive behaviour and attitudes among learners at Suffolk New College. The focus is on creating an environment where learners can excel academically, be prepared for their future, and feel supported throughout their journey.

1. BeSNC Culture:

• This is a set of values learners are encouraged to live by, such as being respectful, motivated, and engaged. It promotes inclusivity, responsibility, and a positive attitude toward learning.

2. Expectations for Behaviour:

• Learners should treat others with respect, engage in learning, attend classes on time, follow college rules, and contribute positively to the community.

• They are also encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities and support peers.

3. Rewards:

• Positive behaviours are recognized through various awards, like commendations for good behaviour, attendance awards, and "BeSNC Star" recognitions.

4. Managing Misbehaviour:

• Minor issues: Examples include poor attendance, disruptive behaviour, or missing deadlines. These are addressed with restorative conversations where learners reflect on their behaviour and aim to improve.

• Ongoing or more serious issues: For ongoing or more serious behaviour, a step-by-step process is followed, escalating from staff interventions to formal review panels. Parents/carers/Next of Kin will be involved.

• Serious Misconduct: Is dealt with under the colleges Disciplinary Policy

5. Phases of Behaviour Management:

• Phase 1: All staff address behaviours through restorative conversations.

• Phase 2: If behaviour doesn’t improve, a formal "Ready to Learn" contract is created with specific actions.

• Phase 3: If behaviour persists, a "Notice to Improve" contract is set.

• Phase 4: If no progress is made, a formal panel may decide if the learner should remain in their programme.

6. Supporting Success:

• The college uses these guidelines to help learners improve their behaviour and stay on track. Every effort is made to guide learners back to positive behaviour rather than punitive measures.
