Last semester we traced the evolution of string music from the Baroque to the late Romantic era. This semester we ask: when that road reached its end, what happened next?
The central premise of this course is simple: after the 20th century, stringed instruments no longer knew what they were. They had been the singing substitute, the salon favorite, the orchestral backbone — and then each of these roles was questioned, dismantled, and rebuilt. Our task is to experience that process firsthand.
The course follows a chronological skeleton, but each week begins not with historical background, but with a specific question or listening experience. Factual preparation (historical context, composer biographies, basic style features) should be completed before class using any resources available — AI tools are welcome. Class time is reserved for what can only happen face-to-face: listening together, thinking together, debating together.
This semester serves as a foundational journey through the pivotal periods of string music, from the birth of the violin family in the early Baroque to the expressive zenith of the late Romantic era. The core purpose is to build a robust framework connecting the evolution of the instruments themselves, the shifting compositional styles, and the transformation of performance aesthetics. By understanding the historical and cultural contexts, students will move beyond mere technical execution to develop informed, nuanced, and historically aware musical interpretations.
