01
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND
Professor Shiang-Yao Liu holds a joint appointment in the Graduate Institute of Science Education and Department of Life Sciences at the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU).
She obtained her PhD degree in science education at Oregon State University, USA, and MSc in Botany at National Taiwan University.
Professor Liu’s primary research focused on students’ and teachers’ conceptions of Nature of Science (NOS), exploring how their worldviews and epistemological beliefs influence science learning and teaching.
02
RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT
Previously a faculty member in the Institute of Environmental Education at the National Kaohsiung Normal University, Prof. Liu has leveraged this expertise to focus her research on integrating socio-scientific and environmental issues into science curricula and designing instructions to promote scientific literacy.
She has led national assessment surveys on environmental and energy literacy for teachers and students, served as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Environmental Education Research [in Chinese], and contributed to the development and revision of new Grade 1-12 curriculum standards.
She has been involved in a series of research projects dedicated to building support systems to enhance teachers’ capacities for interdisciplinary instruction—encompassing marine education, climate change, sustainable development, scientific inquiry, socio-scientific issues, and AI ethics.
Additionally, she investigates the role of scientific knowledge and academic debate within local social controversies (such as food safety and reforestation), translating these findings into curricula that foster learners' argumentation, decision-making, and civic literacy.
03
PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT
Prof. Liu has published articles on various topics including NOS and scientific epistemological beliefs, decision-making, and learning models related to socio-scientific issues, and assessments of environmental literacy.
Bridging academia and public engagement, she collaborated with STS scholars and media producers on the Science Communication Project--“Open the S file” making a series of films about environmental and socio-scientific controversies that won the Best Science Program at the 2019 Golden Bell Awards (Taiwan's equivalent of the Emmy Awards).
